  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Ive got some conflicting advice for down convert of images between RC-X and in camera down convert to HDSDI.

Ive not tested this yet but will do so shortly.

We need to know if the in camera down convert from whatever the sensor is set ie 4k or 5k is as good as RC-X down convert given RC-X can offer some additional tools such as sharpness other algorithms.

Any views its its identical or not so good. Its intended to use as an output to derive a HD Prores master via the HD SDI.

Hi Dave. The HDSDI output of the Epic is a video tap essentially. No one can tell you not to record it, but you can and will sometimes see anomalies on the HDSDI video tap that you would never see from taking advantage of recording 5k or 4k and then generating your HD ProrRes from Redcine-X or Resolve or any other number of tools to take advantage of the oversampling.

Id always fount is satisfactory too but Ive never done a side by side comparison. Be interested in one of the Red guys can let us know their thoughts.

I think I remember that too, but does the processing priority have to be set to give HD SDI priority. Ive not checked this in the latest beta though.

It is full debater full resolution during record and is actually better than using software because it's bypassing the compression of an r3d. If however, you playback an r3d and try to record that, it's not anywhere near usable.

We normally record SDI-to-PIX HD recorder for 90% of our HD broadcast work. Flawless performance for over a year now.

Processing priority?

If you are referring to the Priority tab of the Monitor Control dialog that helps determines which monitor is the control surface.

The quality you will get from recording RED RAW to SSD and processing the footage in RCX is superior to the image coming out of the HDSDI. I can't quantify it for you, and although everyone says it's a "full debayer" coming out the HD SDI I can tell you from hundreds of days shooting with the Epic that it is just not as good as the image you will get from processing RAW with RCX (even with the exact same settings). Just my observations for what it's worth. Sure you can use it and record to an external recorder and this is fine for many applications but don't think you are getting the same quality as if you take the RAW and generate HD size files in RCX. I'd love if someone did a pixel peeping test on this...

I beg to differ when it comes to parts of the image that is under exposed. Redcode really can't handle noise efficiently. But the SDI tap bypasses all redcode compression and looks much cleaner. But properly exposes footage processed through RCX looks great and you obviously have more control over the image. You are correct in saying the debayered footage through the SDI may have a slightly different aesthetic, it's very slight, but I wouldn't say it's better or worse.

If nothing else, be cautious of small complex patterns that might show you moire on the HDSDI tap. There are times (as a DIT) I'm asked to pop a card, wrangle it, and bring up a shot in RCX to tell the DP whether or not a pattern of noise or moire is really "there" or not. 9 times out of 10 it's not there on the recorded footage, but was there on the HDSDI video tap. This doesn't happen a whole lot, but it would be something I would look out for if you're going to bypass internal recording and record straight from the tap.
