I'm wondering if any of the people who got their Scarlets can do some HDRX.
All the tests are appreciated, did anyone get a chance to check out that feature and if so, can you please post some samples?

Ok, i waited 3 days.lol

HDRX is this mysterious feature that no one tested and i don't know why. Can someone please post something.

I'll probably get blasted for this comment but..."In my opinion", HDRx is over rated. I would almost go as far as saying it's a gimmick. Your getting 13.5 stops of dynamic range anyway. HDRx is "up to" 18 stops. Not, "you'll get" 18 stops when you turn it on. 99% of the time you will not need it. 99% of the "audience/clients" (or general public) will not care either and/or notice a dramatic difference.

I think why most Scarlet users don't care is because of the of huge downside of the extra data processing/storage in post. Most Scarlet users are on a tight budget, otherwise they would have bought an Epic.

However, there are two good reason why "I think" HDRx was put in the Scarlet.

1) HDRx suits Reds philosophy of "professional tools". They added it, to justify the increase in the purchase price and to part from prosumer (ie, $3k to $10K).
2) HDRx technology is beging improved by Red all the time. HDRx will probably get upgraded sometime in the future and that's why they put it in now (i.e. ready for upgrades).

Hence, in my opinion, the current HDRx is over rated. Maybe in 2 years it will be good.

I'm sure people will love to slam this post...

Haven't had a chance to play with our Epic-X yet, as the SCARLET production took up some of the manpower in engineering. You lucky devils! So I've been waiting for Stage 3 for a few years now, when did you all order your SCARLETs? Tell me you had to wait at least two weeks?

I'm sure you wouldnt get slammed for a post like this. But...

HDRx was put to the reduser.net community. Simply, it was said that the inclusion of the feature would tag another $1000 on to the cost of the brain. For the most part, people agreed that this would be a good thing - yes it adds to the cost, but as a feature its worth having.

Now I take your point, that in most situations you're not going to be using the feature. But its another tool in your bag for when you truely need it, and it is at that moment that you see its real value.

With respect, I completely reject the notion that RED included HDRx to justify the price of the brain. If they needed to justify the price, the need only say one thing....

I'm not gonna blast you but to say it's a gimmick and talk like it's useless just clarifies you don't really know how to use it creatively, or don't care to. I don't mean to be offensive, but have you really pushed HDRX? Or seriously tried using it? I personally am thrilled that my Scarlet has HDRX and cannon wait to put it to use!

Hopefully someone will post some awesome footage and prove me wrong. However, I can't find any "legitimate footage" or threads on reduser where HDRx was helpful. Maybe someone can help me? By legitimate, I mean a project or shoot that was not staged for the sole purpose of using HDRx. All of the examples I could find are people "going out of their way" to find a situation where HDRx would be effective. Hence why I thought it was a over rated.

HDRx is a tool, but it's like one at the back of the tool box that gets dusty. Is this not true, or am I talking rubbish?

I too agree the notion that it's overrated or not needed is a bit limited. Many times, one doesn't need the full 14.5 stops of DR of an Alexa, or a Kodak stock in an Arri 535, but the times you DO need it, when you don't want to wash out your actors or talent with silks, and wish to simply bounce to fill in bright sunlight, is exactly when you will see the difference between film and video. And that's when you need HDRx. Or if you need (as one example I saw very clearly showed) to shoot inside a car in daylight, and don't have the time, money, or patience to ND the glass. Or times when just a bit more range is what you need to elevate the pedigree of the shoot or shot. You don't need more than a couple stops, but in this business, it's a cascade of the "little things' that end up making the difference.

I'd also add that I've heard that Red's Cine-X implementation of the HDRx composting is not very good, and is far better done with software that allows you to do a luma key to isolated areas where you need to apply the layer. From what I've heard, Cine-X basically just blend the two, making it all look a bit washed out. Just what I've been told, haven't tried it yet myself.

Yeah, those videos are awesome but they're all "test footage".

Hopefully someone in the future will post a music video or short film and show where they used HDRx "because" it was useful. Not because the camera "has" HDRx.

It would be good, for example, if the director or DP, would comment that they used HDRx in "this scene", or on "this shot", and that made a "big difference", and without this "HDRx feature", this shot or scene would not be as good.

I really want to learn from other people, and for someone to show me, where and how to use HDRx, and where not to use HDRx.

So far I can't find any commercial footage, where HDRx was used. Can someone help me find some?
