  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

HDRx scoop...

Here is an old clip with the new "Magic Button" algorithm. Not only does the motion look very natural but you can see how good EPIC is with skew... or lack of it.

WOW!
This feels so intense while still being very "easy" to look at.
What a way to start the day...

I don't get it! What's so impressive about this?
Why, everytime when Jim posts something everyone is like: WOW! Incredible! I can't believe it"....and so on?

HDRx gives you up to 18 stops of dynamic range. That isn't something you have access to every day. The primary issue with any HDR is what it does with motion. These clips show the most difficult stuff... and how HDRx handles it. If it looks "normal" to you... that is a huge thing. Mainly because no one has ever done this before... ever.

If you hear a lot of "wow"... maybe it is because RED is pushing ever corner on the envelop. RED is 5K in a 1080P world. EPIC is 1/3 the size of the nearest 1080P competitor (real competitor). RED is 1/3 to 1/10th the cost of the other pro digital cinema cameras. RED gives you free software to use... and updates it seemingly every day. RED upgrades stuff for free. RED lets you trade you 3 year old camera in for full value.

When I write this... I think to myself, WOW!

And think about this... you got an answer to your question at 2:12am... 5 minutes after you posted your question.

I'll be polite;) he's demonstrating high dynamic range with a motion algorithm that keeps the image from revealing the the differences between the separate exposure tracks (light and dark) that are combined to create that image.

We sort of have been emm...how should I say, been following the HDRx™ progress for a while. So when we marvel at the results its because we know the alternatives out there. There are no alternatives. That is a raw image, its absolutely incredible.

You and your team never cease to amaze. It's almost surreal how fast you guys are advancing things and from the sound of things you have a few more surprises in store for us. Can't wait... :)

There's not enough wows... one gets the feeling people don't entirely realize what is going on here. This is probably the most exciting news since we heard Epic was going to be modular. It most likely means that HDRX will seamlessly cut with non hdrx footage which makes it highly valuable.

Funny thing is... most of the time "Wow" is exactly what I want to say, but I worry that I won't be adding anything of value to the thread.

And usually when I do post "Wow" I mean.. Holy S#*T!!

This is a great post!

very well said Jim, You have surmised my feelings in that post. These are are tough economic times. for a young company to offer full value trades speaks volumes about its leadership. I will continue to support your company in every which way I can, as you guys have allowed me to enjoy the American dream.

Man I want to experimental light with 18 stops so bad I've never seem moving pictures with that much lat in my life!

some very good points were just brought up in this.

aside from the clips being amazing, everyone is saying "wow" because we realize that we'll have this crazy functionality pretty soon here. which makes me say wow.
also if you aren't saying wow, then the question you should ask is, "what would this look like if i filmed it with a normal camera?"

more often then not, the answer will be, "not this good"

back on topic, this does look quite amazing.

Jim,

Do you expect tools to be created that will allow you to change your your HDRx mix like key framing it, so you can transition from outdoors to in doors and vice versa? This could help a ton with not needing to pull the iris as much.

Also!
Something else people should note...is try shooting fire with any camera with compression. Watch the darn thing fall apart completely. This is by far the best shot fire ever. It even one ups film from what I've seen at this point. I bet you could light a whole room with just that fire place with RED EPIC.

Jim, do you still have the old pole spinning video?

Can you do another comparison screen shot of the old motion characteristics at +3 stops (or whatever it was) and this new algorithm?

I was a bit of a critic of the awkward motion handling in the past, but this new technique passes the eye test instantly.

Exciting... Graeme what ever you are doing keep doing it.

Can we see Vegas?

Tenacity and perseverance usually. Or bloody stubbornness or something like that.

And most probably at NAB indeed.

Graeme

Wow, that look very close to what the human eye can see in that fire place.

Graeme is a genius and that's not a complement, it's a fact.

Thank You.

Hey, this looks good! Cool, cool, cool...

You could just run two versions of the shot through REDCINE - one with a high setting and one with a low setting... then crossfade between them in your editing program?

That's why we call him The Big Brain.
:)

And those that know me well know that "big brain" is a real big problem for me. Seriously. I'll still take the compliment though!
