  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

HDRx "Day for night" grading test

Sick. Love it. Very beautiful grade BTW. You really made the footage sing. Thank you for taking the time. This shows more than just the DFN capabilities. It gives a small preview of what Epic's 5k could look like in the hands of trained colorists.

I know this was just a test, but the light shaft moves to the right a bit.

I loooove the last few frames when you see the "moonlight" on his hand. I am so flippin' excited about this. Can't wait to see a noon exterior for night!!

I moved it on purpose, as if someone is just shining the light reflection on the puppet, while holding it by hand.

Jake,

What is the funny mask on the darker footage? Is that something with the HDRx™™ or a mask you made to simulate a light?

Dusty

It's an imitation of a light reflected from a broken mirror. Otherwise, the puppet would have been totally dark.

Gotcha. I felt it could have been a light leaking through a door from an other room.

(BTW, I edited that post a bit.)

Yes, that would be another good reason for the light. In that case I would've just left the "light" alone:-)

Addaboy Jake!

I had been fence sitting re: turning my RED1 in for Epic -- until they announced/showed these expanded dynamic range features.

I had been thinking I would hold out until the Monstro sensors came out and then exchange my RED1 for one of those bodies. But these awesome exposure features are 'gotta have' things for me... And they've become 'gotta have now' features because of things like you've just done with this grade (excellent DFN by the way) and the grade that Tom put together in another thread (where there's no type of ND filter that could have accomplished his exposure).

I want the camera now because its going to take me awhile to rethink how I photograph stories, how I budget projects, how I make films.

Awesome. Keep the good stuff coming.

Jake, really solid work. Very impressive; I actually thought the light leak looked like it was coming from a keyhole or something along those lines. Just really nice and subtle and it totally sells.

What photo are you referring to? The Joshua Tree shot with the moon between the branches of a tree in the foreground? I am sorry for the off-topic, but I don't understand what you are saying.

Hi Roberto,

I'm referring to an image Tom Lowe and Ketch took at the Salton Sea, with blown highlights in the water and sky that they were able to hold with HDRx™. Point re: ND is that no grad or attenuator would have accomplished the image and that the HDRx™ allowed for a better image, with rich details in the dark areas that dominate the frame, than would have been possible without HDRx™.

This example (both graded DFN and also the more normal Day for Day grades) is another fine one--very, very nice not needing to spend the time and money throwing ND on the windows.

Stating the obvious: there are positive creative and budgetary implications for this camera.

Regards,
P

I just would like to add, that even if this was shot on film with it's inherent wide dynamic range, this scene still would have been difficult to grade due to a purposefully constructed extreme subject matter (backlit main subject, blown out outside, decreased contrast and color saturation). With HDRx it is now possible to creatively "fix" all those issues with no use of any keys or windows whatsoever, except obviously the window on the puppet in the DFN grade. That only can mean tremendous savings in post grading... or not:-) It can also mean more of "will fix it in post"...
