  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

HDR-X Warning with Build 2.0.5!!

Sorry to hear it. This is my worst nightmare. I usually carry a little HD camera with me just in case, something is better than nothing. Hate having to trouble shoot with a ticking clock on a shoot that can't be repeated. Makes my stomach tie into a knot. I feel for you.

Very sorry to hear about this, Ketch, but to reiterate what others have said, thank you for sharing this cautionary tale.

I'm also waiting on a RedMote, so of course I'm curious to know if there would be any possible way to turn off HDRx in such a circumstance using the Side Handle?

On a related note: having a force upgrade handy on a laptop or a spare SSD does seem like a good idea, but having a 64gb SSD essentially set aside (for the truly prepared) seems a little unrealistic for most, if not a bit cost prohibitive. I only have 256gb media, and while such a notion could work in certain circumstances such as Ketch has outlined, it would also be a bit of a juggling act for regular implementation.

This reminds me of the plans Red had mentioned in the past about an SSD->CF adapter...it would be amazing to have a force upgrade saved to an 8gb or whatever CF card that you could save for use in time-sensitive emergencies (especially when you might not have a laptop set-up and ready), without having to take one of your SSD mags out of rotation. I'm hoping they haven't completely abandoned the idea of such a reader, even if it's only real value would be for upgrading firmware, saving and loading camera looks, etc.

Thoughts?

The spare card could also be used for capturing footage in a jam... just delete the folder or format the card in camera. I guess having the release build on a laptop and SSD reader on hand is also great... the only problem is what if you don't have access to power?

Thanks for sharing your experience Ketch. As with everyone else who has posted here, I feel your pain.
At the same time, by informing the community - not only of the problem, but your "lessons learned recommendations", you are doing all of us a great service. Good info and suggestions. This is one of the best validations for this section of REDuser. Thanks again.

If I could add a few questions: First, in your photos, it looks like you were very close to the action. Were you concerned that any concussions from the fireworks might shake the camera - even slightly?

You mentioned that your "A" position was the only one that would capture the entire building in frame. Did you record even one frame of the building with the 8R during your prep / test? Would love to see how that lens treats the perspective.

With an opportunity to get such a prime location for that shot - out of curiousity, did you consider using one of your 3D rigs?

Finally, have a wonderful and issue free 2012 (you deserve it). Dues have certainly been paid forward!

Thanks for sharing Ketch! I'm very sorry to hear this happening to you! I just hope the pain about the mishap will fade soon. I guess everybody here has had something similar happen to him - be it on a more or less important situation - and nobody ever wants it to happen twice. So being prepared is one thing, but being able to be prepared is another. Having a spare epic is not always possible.

Maybe having a cheaper solution than the 64GB ssd might help. Sort of a life saver SSD/SD card/adapter or a low GIG like 1-8 GB card
even a scarleteer could afford. Don't know how much of an effort this would be, but at least it sounds simple :)

Because sometimes even a laptop and the reader is too much to lug around, but an ssd card could always slip in somewhere. I know we wouldn't have to have it, because we could always just stay safe with the firmware built we trust... but you never know what happens and a fail safe restore card would mostly just be a feel good, good luck charm but still valuable for that one single situation where you need to go clean install just in case you cant think of how else to get rid of your problem in a short amount of time.

What say you, RED? :)

BTW you can't just all head over to Dubai... Nobody will be left in Europe or LA... Do you wanna share some more info on your plans? Would love to hear what you are up to now, Ketch! Whatever it is, I wish you all the luck and good health to do it!

Cheers!
Patrick

Ketch,

Damn brother. That luck stinks!

I have noticed that on my Epic X the HDRx is a little buggy too. The worst I have gotten is bizarre pink screen, or occasionally the LCD goes split screen and swaps the halves around. A good reboot or two usually helped.

I am wondering if this is perhaps a conflict with the redmote and HDRx?

But thanks for informing us of this issue. I will keep an eye out for it when my redmote arrives (fingers crossed soon!)

It is odd that it happened to two cameras. What was it that had both cameras fail that way on the same day? Other than HDRx what was done differently to your previous shoots where all worked fine?

Wishing you no more Epic fails this new year :)

Cheers,

Ivan

Thanks for al kind words and support shared guys, much appreciated... ;)

Yeah it sure did stink big time, and for this I shared here, this is important, in fact this is very important!!

This is not like an unproperly reporting of a Bug, which should be reported to RED instead, this is something the community needs be aware of,
and I posted the Workaround solution to the problem as to insure that this does not happen to any one else,
unless they don't happen to find out here before or choose to ignore suggestions given.

To try an answer your questions:

I was never concerned with the camera been shacked up by neither the explosions or disturbed by the strong flashes of light,
as the camera has been in this situation before in a control explosion in a Studio at F.lli Cartocci in Rome Italy, no issues at all.

No issues with the Redmote and HDR-X, in fact the Redmote is a critical tool to turn HDR-X off if camera freezes to the point were it turns on but doe not send an image out,
just you need to take the Redmote to Local and navigate to HDR-X and turn IT off, done.

The camera had been shooting all Day and Night on the same exact location capturing images of the Burj Kalifa and the Dancing Water Fountain,
no issues at all, not till the end of the day when HDR-X was turned on, so HDR-X with Beta Build 2.0.5 was the issue here.

Yes I did recorded several hundred Gigas of footage with the 8R, so we'll share as part of our full video when allow to do so, as this has been a very particular project for a very particular Client.

3D was not requested for this shot, and bringing the additional gear and do the set up would have been no problem, I wish I did actually, oh well next time... ;)

It did not happened to TWO cameras, just on my camera on the "A" position with the Widest lens, an 8R, allowing for full Building to show on frame,
the other event were the HDR-X caused the same issue on Joseph's camera was not in this same day, it was in our prior visit to Dubai and there I was able to turn HDR-X off via the Redmote,
but this time the Redmote was not upgraded and this was my fault, not having used the Redmote for the past month after upgrading to 2.0.5, and I paid the price for it, my BAD.

Thanks and Happy 2012 to you guys as well, and don't worry Patrick, Dubai is just one part, yes an important part of my program, but Italy,
LA and the rest of the globe remain high in my priorities of things, and wil see more of me then most will be able ot handle he he, 2012 will be a year that for me really put it to the top!!

As far as were I am headed next Patrick, next stop is to New Zealand, a visit to PJ and Park Road, a visit to Brazil for an important and Super Sexy Epic Workshop,
which will also be the base for the recording of my first Epic form Set up to Print Workshops, filmed for Free Distribution, then to shoot my first 3D Motion Picture,
followed by a second and possibly a third, with a screening of our First Motion Picture in December 2012, it should be an interesting year indeed... ;)

Ditto on my Epic-M with no REDmote

Would love to see this happen..

Yes.

An sd card On the epic brain would have been nice for these kinds of emergencies.

A 950$ SSD that carries only the FW upgrade...well...I don't have to say much else, do I?

Storing a back-up system on an SSD card is indeed a luxury. An sd card would surely have been better than having to bring a laptop and redmag reader on every shoot.

Yeah.

You know David if RED did have an SSD to CF converter for "upgrades" it would be nice. Then a day later some retard would come on here and ask RED why they can't record 3:1 uncompressed onto and 8gb cf card.

Its a no win. Even a USB drive could have worked or a Bluetooth connection from an iPhone or iPad might have been a good ide but they packed everything into the brain and there was no room for anything else.

Once upon a time this company in California was talking about making an adapter to put CF cards in the SSD slot......:leaving:

Seems to me that it might make sense for another product to enter the "Under Development" que.

A RED form factor SSD to be used only for updates and backup / settings safety.

Just as the Scarlet brain uses parts that did not meet EPIC specs, SSD's that did not meet recording specs could be reallocated to this purpose.
What better way to recycle?

RED could tag the SSD with a on screen warning that it is not enabled for image capture - perhaps an engraving on the housing that states the same - or better yet, on the exposed end (where you now read 64, 128 or 256) the label could read "RED Firmware"?

I'd certainly pay a reasonable sum for one of these. Fits in with a proper risk management plan without tying up recordable media. Plus it removes the danger of mixing them up.
Perhaps this is a solution that every owner of an EPIC, Scarlet and/or SSD enabled R1 would want at least one of?
If enough of us ask...

That's why they are selling 4 SSDs packages: 1 formatted ssd for blackshading, 1 with the beta firmware, 1 with the official firmware and 1 for recording.

Guys,

the sole purpose of this thread was to warn and give a solution workaround, on the ONLY EVER BUG ISSUE
I have found in almost ONE YEAR OF EPIC USE!!

If some of you guys don't learn to be a bit more on to the Topic, less dramatic, more Professional, and willing to help,
then you are part of the problem, and not the solution, and it is in part because of some of your attitude here that things get
taken out of proportion on th efield by none Redusers, and I undersdtadn why at times, it is our fault, as we always blow things out of F^%#$@$ Proportion!!

I'm now almost sorry I did started this Tread!!

At hand and its purpose threads like this will be nonsense and of no use to those in need, keep to the point don't always try and take the main subject off line
as that will serve no good to any one.

The SSD solution as having one with a Force Upgrade File on it, is my solution, well, one of them, when using BETA software, I have done this since BUILD 1. on M8
you don't want to use BETA don't you do but don't want to have one SSD assigned to it, Don't, just bring your laptop as you should any ways,
and be sure to have the SSD reader as you should any ways.

I'm always overly safe, nothing ever happens to me because of it, and my reputation is sound and for this I get paid big box, yet when I don't take care of
things then S^$%# can happen, mostly always the OPERATOR's fault, as in this case if I was properly Prepared I would had fixed on the field, but I wasn't
and I paid the price, I was not well, working with High Fever, didn't think well, and didn't prepare, however I learned form it and report it here,
in the hope to help others avoid the same issue to those that are using BETA 2.0.5 till RED, comes up with a fix.

The SSD with CF adaptor was mentioned, so we all still hope to see it reality, but till then I posted your available solutions, as a SAFETY NET WHEN USING BETA BUILD.

Newbie question, what is a Force Upgrade folder and when and how do you use it?

Enrique,

a Force Upgrade File is what comes inside the folder for the Upgrades from RED, this need to be dragged inside your SSD Media via your SSD
reader connected to your Computer, then the SSD is inserted in to the Camera to perform the BUild Upgrade, which you must follow the
directions that come in the Download Main Upgrade Folder.
