Hey guys, just a quick survey,

what is everyone doing now that we are shooting 5k HDR and whatnot, for HDD space? We have only done a few shoots so far, but it can very easily get expensive when you shoot 600-700gb a day and then you need to back that up 1 - 3 times (depending on your backup philosophy)

I know for big expensive blockbusters and commercials its not a problem, just buy more HDD's but when shooting lower budget stuff, its kinda hard to tell the producers that they need to buy 15TB to hold there shitty short film.

We are currently looking into something like this http://www.drobo.com/products/drobopro/index.php or something similar from hitachi

That way be can expand, raid, blah blah in order to suit the client and just give them a box of HDD's at the end.

Another vote for bare SATA drives - usually under £40 per TB and can be mounted with decent speed in dirt cheap esata hotswap trayless cases. Add a nice archive case to each drive and its a reasonably elegant solution.

We reckon on media costs of £25/hr for backup costs on typical EPIC material, for 2 x hard drive and 1xLTO backup.

We buy bare drives too, they are always getting cheaper, but Red data (from Epic) is getting bigger and bigger. Just finished a wake board shoot shooting Slo Mo (120FPS) in 4K HD and blew through the SSDs like crazy, around 700 GB a day.

At my home/edit suite i use a 5 bay hot swappable drive bay.....use 3TB Hitachi drives for $185 eaach and backup everything ONCE. Then on the job out in the field i USED to bring my 5 bay Hot Swap device....but now i use a 3.5" & 2.5" reader for $79usd....Same philosophy like hot swap device, but smaller and cheaper ----lot more portable. Just push in the drive to the reader--no bay or box ---looks kind of ugly and "unclean" but works beautifully.

700GBs seems like a lot in data terms, but it will fit quite snugly on a 1TB SATA drive. Plus another 1TB drive for second back up will come to less than £100. That still a lot less than the cost of one 60 minute Sony HDCam SR tape...

We have been using 2 TB drives in plastic cases, in duplicate, stored separately in Pelican cases for archival storage (in different locations). It is faster and cheaper and you get immediate access to the files if you need them. We went around and around about this and I was finally convinced by our audio house to archive this way because of their lack of trust in tape after experiencing deterioration of archival masters.

I don't think this is an ideal situation, but its the best in an imperfect world, I think.

I shot some wake boarding on Epic last week and wow, you can eat up data really fast. One of the "shots" was over 18 min. I rolled on the rider for 3-4 min. but at 120 FPS. I am learning to be more carful with how long my takes are.

I'm using the "drive toaster" too. I love that thing. Same deal bare drives and 5 bay at home.
