Sdi hd is 10bit display port is a 10 bit emulate

[Martin Fissher]

Sdi hd is 10bit display port is a 10 bit emulate

This also applies to the quadro 4800 ?

Thanks

Hi, could you explain this a little further?

[Lucas Wilson]

Ricardo,

Please explain what you mean here.

Lucas

[RRafael]

Ok sdi hd is real 10bit signal
Display port is a emulation not real 10bit
if you have both use sdi hd for color grade and display port edition reference

Sorry Rafael, but that is incorrect. Display Port, if properly output from an NVidia card, is true 10-bit.

My Opinion.

This my opnion, color grade work need minimun true 10 bit panel color processing for me (12 bit to 16 bit, some profesional monitor color processing like Barco, BON or Cine-tal). I never see display port in into professonal monitor, dont have Fibre channel extender for real setup, for example.

For me Color Grade setup is.

1 Program Monitor (scratch App) like HP Dream Color, DVI or Display port (10 bit Reference dont color work)

1 Big reference Monitor like Panasonic 50´or Led Monitors (if you dont have proyector)

1 DVI monitor with Vector Scope or Wave Form (4.2.2. work)

1 Color Grade Monitor (4.4.4 for film aplication and Waver form)

Ricardo,

I you feel the Dreamcolor is not accurate enough for critical color work then that's your opinion.

But it is a true 10-bit panel that can be fed true 10-bit over Displayport.

do you guys think that actually have a sdi dual link monitor actually change teh grade experience ?

single link sdi is 422 right?

thanks

Yes, single link HD-SDI is 1.5mbs, 422. Dual link SDI, and 3G HD-SDI are 3gb, 444 signals.

YMMV, but in my experience, its all a matter of fine degrees. If you are grading for broadcast/web delivery, than you can do a fine job with a quality 8bit broadcast reference monitor. For theatrical work or larger displays, there is a sublte increase in color fidelity with 10bit. Subtle is the key word though, if you are working with a very good broadcast monitor. Where it becomes most obvious is large flat color surfaces like blue skys where minor banding might appear on an 8bit monitor. However, you can still grade as long as you are aware of the banding artifacts as being display only and not necessarily part of the grade.

Thanks paul,
i agree that 8bit vs 10 bit panel is mostly the ability to check the banding...

but actually i was asking the difference between have a 10 bit display that have single link or dual link....

Dual link should be RGB 444 , and single link should be YUV 422 right?
so in terms of grading experience does the dual link actually give benefit ?
it should on paper...but in real life?

PS:display port is RGB?...and RGB should be considered better than YUV in terms of viewing?

Thanks
