  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Hi Guys
We are setting up our new ENG vans in Kabul and moving from Triax based cameras to the Red and the Sony PDW700 for acquisition. What have you guys found is the max distance on RG6 you can run? Have done tons of searches on google with no luck on this. The primary feed will be microwave camera backs to the trucks, but in some cases, such as inside buildings this may not be possible even with COFDM signals.

I would imagine we would need some flexibility here to be able to go from 200 meters to 600 meters for some locations. With security tight here we sometimes cannot get the Van closer then 400 meters to parliament or the presidential palace and I will need the long runs.

You can always drop a Video Distribution Amplifier (VDA) into the line along the way to boost back up the signal. The AJA HD5DA does HD-SDI and can power off 5vdc.

Tactical 12 fiber is the way to go Ron. It's Kevlar coated and has 12 strands of single mode fiber. It's military grade and can be very forgiving, but must be cleaned often. We use it all over the US for sporting events, like NASCAR, Football and Basketball.

Working on it bit by bit in the free time. Want to do the story of what it takes to do business over here, the challenges, the threats, etc. Have shot a few hours so far, still figure I am a year away, plus now that I have my Red, I want to reshoot a bunch of the exteriors I already shot.

Will keep everyone posted.

If you do use RG6 be sure to get a broadcast grade digital coax. There are many grades of RG6 built for different uses. The common RF cable TV grade will have much higher losses. You can also use RG11 for longer distances with half the loss. But fiber is the choice for anything over 150 meters.
Canare makes excellent quality digital coax and their BNC connectors and termination tools are first rate too.
 
If you go the AJA route, make sure you get ReClocking D/A's.
You have to add a D/A every 100 meters (about 300 feet)

But fiber is the best way to go for super long runs.

Thanks for the tip, when I spoke to AJA they did not even mention that. We are going to do both setups, RG11 for shorter runs, and Fiber for the longer runs.

Ron,

If you need HD/SDI transmission with all of the additinal signals usually required for ENG/EFP, you may find our CopperHead system as a good solution. It will work with both the RED and the PDW700.
