Hello you all.
I am trying to build a post suite and I am wondering what would you think its the best monitor (full hd) for client viewing and color grading and stuff.
I am thinking about the Sony LMD-4250WHD.

I have heard the eCinema is really good but out of the 10.000.-USD spending limit so out of reach. The cinetal is nice but we want something bigger in size that could show off a bit ;)
What kind of monitors do you have in your editing suite???
Has anyone tried the Sony I mentioned???
DO you have a better option that could be in the price range???
Thanks so much.

Mark, that LaCie appears to be only an 8-bit monitor, for that price, why not get the HP?

I'd buy the Dreamcolor for sure (although I found blacks to be better on TVLogic (more $$)) I have not used the Lacie 700 - just pointing it out - there's a lot of good buzz about it.

I need to learn more about this, any recommendations? As a hard science major (Bachelor in CS) I read "DVI" and think "eesh, only 8bit". I guess I'm not understanding what makes a "good" LCD besides going from 8bit 16.7mil colors (aka DVI) up to deep color. That's one thing I wish I got from NAB that I dont, side-by-side comparison. You can't see the $900 LacCie next to the $10k units

Monitors are a FAST moving target at the moment.

Barco's RHDM-2301 is pretty much the shit right now.

But 10-bit panels are rolling out and I would expect to see LOTS of activity.

And you can have all the bits in the world - but if you have no way to calibrate and manage color - what's the point?

We are about to deploy Cinespace at Offhollywood - http://cinespace.risingsunresearch.com/

One place I use to track display info here - http://www.displayblog.com/

Just get the eye-one for calibrating the DreamColor. HP recommends you let the monitor warm up for 30 min for most accurate color. They also claim you only need to calibrate it every 6 months.

the Lacie 724 seem to be a Samsung design. tried to use it with the aja hi5 on the RED, but no luck, also Linked on a hdlink pro we could not get it to work, but it does work on the hdmi port of the red in dvi and 720p modus. . Colors are beautifull, but only for computer use.. also the settings and menu and scaling seems a bit limited and strange : if you dont have signal, you cannot control the menu's.
We also tried the HP, but in hdmi input there some weird 'image enhancement' problem, especially visible on details - try something with a texture and you will see what i mean. that doesnt happen on the dvi port. but the dvi port only works in 60hz... the hdmi does works for 25p and 24p. so if hp would fix that hdmi image problem, it could be a winner.
We are for the moment very happy with the Eizo hd2441w, and today received the successor the Eizo hd2442, cheaper and should also support 24fps... we will test it the following days... no led backlight, but VERY good technology, also backed with a 5 year warranty.

I believe the Barco uses the same 23" 10bit panel that Sony and eCinema are going to be using. To my knowledge there is only one 10bit panel on the market right now. The dreamcolor is also an 8bit panel and uses dithering to achieve 10bits. The upcoming DPX display from ecinema will include a 40" model but I believe this is based on a yet to be released panel. To my knowledge there are no large color critical displays out at the moment.

are you guys talking monitors for editing or dedicated color grading? - for color grading/ field monitoring on a budget - isnt the panasonic 1700 (or something) a pretty good bid? (3500usd)

there are a lot of problems in the highlights on the panasonic 1700. And resolution is not so great. It's not a full HD...

See you.

While we are on the subject, we a looking for a 52" 1080p or so client monitor for the studio.
For evaluating, we have a Sony BVM-D CRT series monitor. We obviously want something that will produce a good image.
Any ideas on a good consumer grade large display. How important is contrast range. We are looking to get at least 30,000/1 ratio.

Thanks,
Dave

Nice info on the thread. But it would be awesome if you could help me answering these questions:
What kind of monitors do you have in your editing suite??? (only the HP, Lacie??)
Has anyone tried the Sony I mentioned???
DO you have a better option that could be in the price range???
Thanks so much.
I am thinking about the Sony LMD-4250WHD.
I want something bigger than 24 inch but reliable. 10K tops.

HELLO FELLOW,
THE Sony LMD-4250WHD MONITOR NEEDS A ADAPTOR TO TRANSCODE SIGNAL BNC IN HD SDI 4:2:2 AND THE PRICE IS ABOUT US$ 2.0000.

HDSDI/4:2:2 SDI Input Adaptor for select Sony LCD Monitors
http://pro.sony.com/bbsc/ssr/product-BKM243HS/

AND THE MONITOR DOESN'T WORK WITH 1080 60 P.

Thanks for the info. It looks like the B&H website is wrong, they claim it does 1080 60P but Sony's website states the opposite.
Thanks again, it was good to know.
Any advice on this size range?
