  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Hawk-Woods SD-1 Sound Devices Hirose DC Input Sled

I was looking at that as well but ended up sticking with the Sony NP sled because I had one and it is one less cable to worry about. Of course, it is always going to depend on your application. For 'run and gun' (don't like that term) I need to be light as possible. I find both the Zoom and the MixPre 6 too big for solo work and I don't need that many channels, so I only use the MixPre 3. It normally hangs, V locked, off the back of my PAG batteries - never underneath the camera.

Obviously no cables connected in this pic.

Yes, if a person is one man runninggunning, then the MixPre3 holds a strong appeal for teeny tiny small size.

The Hawk-Woods Hirose battery sled has the problem of what if the cable gets lose / broken, or even simply when you change camera batteries? Then all power to the MixPre3 is lost! Depending on the timing, this could be potentially pretty awful. It is better to keep some kind of internal batteries running as well as a back up (thus the benefit of if the recorder has a hirose input built in).

Just advocating for the best in the niche ;-)

But I'm not blind to the fact the MixPre3 holds an excellent strength in its very very small size, and I mention that frequently as its benefit! :-) As size matters if you're rigging it to a camera and you're a one man band

The Hawk Woods definitely looks the best to me. The other options are much larger.

However. Keep in mind you can absolutely power the MixPre3 and MixPre6 over USB. USB-A to USB-C cable running from Red to MixPre will give you low power mode which just limits you to 2 phantom power channels which is likely more than you need if attaching it to camera. This allows you to keep AA sled attached to MixPre incase cable gets disconnected or when you are changing batteries on camera.

I use the Anker PowerCore+ 20100 USB-C to power my MixPre 6 when it is in my small sound bag and I have never had any issues. I have found I prefer to just wear a small sound bag over my shoulder instead of rigging it to the camera.

I would love to someday see a solution that allows wireless timecode and record triggering for these devices.

I wish I hade bag batteries. I dig how you mounted them. I tested the mixpre-6 under the camera, but I feel I dont trust it there. I wish it had the thicker screew. I wish it would atleast been more centered under the camera.
