  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

HAWK Anamorphic primes & Zoom for hire_NYC

Haskell! nice. Mark Pederson rocks.

Indeed, I look forward to a nice working relationship with Mark and OffHollywood...they trained me on RED from the beginning, how could I forget that.

Back on topic, soon as we are set up (about 1 week) anyone is welcome to hit me up and come down to check out the glass (if its not out already). This glass is not exactly common in the states so our rental rates are being sorted out but I can assure you they will be priced fairly.

cheers.

Bud do these also cover FF35?! That would justify the cost.

Marc, when you say simply the best I assume you include Primos in that statement? I know next to nothing about anamorphics.

Roberto, maybe I overreacted because I would love to work with them. I didn´t test them beside Primos. I just love there "3 dimensional" picture with no flare. Because of that Vantage created a filter to get this typical horizontal blue flare if you need it.

Greetings fellow Scadling...stay in touch man, we always use a hand lugging around the HAWKs. I am currently setting up a comparison test for a film maker who really wants to see all the differences between our ARRI Master primes to our HAWK anamorphics...and obviously we are talking about two completely different beast here but it should be a fun test either way and I look forward to sharing some results.

So there was a bit more demand then I was prepared for on this glass, as we only have one set I am trying to reserve it for features cause it makes more sense to schedule them this way. if I have not gotten back to you I will today in regards to rental. Even if you want them for commercial or music video use, I can still get you HAWKs...just a matter of scheduling.

I just wrapped a shoot with them and I am extremely impressed with the performance both mechanically and optically speaking...I am also a big fan of the anamorphic characteristics and as soon as production green lights me I will share some grabs so you can see what I am talking about. The lenses are incredibly sharp as well and if you know how to work with them you can really pull off some breathtaking images, the scope of the picture is simply epic.

Also, thanks again RED for supporting a de-squeezed image in the RED LCD, we have been stress testing build 18 with our HAWKs and besides a few hiccups with playback errors, its been pretty rock solid. The LCD and EVF will give you the proper aspect ratio of the anamorphic image and even the SDI out to our panasonic HD displays is
de-squeezed. Incredible.

Someone told me Wes Anderson is using Hawks right now?

Someone told me Wes Anderson is using Hawks right now?

I would love to know if Wes Anderson is using the Hawks, I will try and touch base with him or his crew and confirm this.

I am on a shoot but will try to answer all question both here and in my box asap! Cheers.

Hi,

I just encountered that hawk anamorphic lenses was also used in the Movie "Sunshine".

DoP was Alwin Kuchler (BSC) and he said that "...the Hawk lenses offered more contrast than the Panavision Primo E & C Series. The Hawk lenses matched well with Zeiss Ultra primes..." ( Vision ARRI Magazine Issue 3 - 12/06 on Page 28)

cheers

Interesting update thanks Aykank. I would like to revisit this film and see the Hawk ultra prime combo. We have a Set of Master primes in house at the moment and our Hawks just became available. We are cooking up a Sci-fi for the fall that is shaping together very well and my DoP and I are quite exited to explore the Hawk RED combo.

For those who are interested in RED + HAWK or ARRI MP packages, dont hesitate to contact me up and I will set you up. I am working out an online system with all our inventory so people can clearly see what is available.

I am assuming that you have the 1.3x Hawk V-Lite anamorphics. I was talking to an experienced Cinematographer the other day who just assumed all anamorphic glass was 2x, as traditionally used with full Academy 35mm negative.

IMHO using 2x glass on a wide format sensor wastes too many pixels versus 1.3x, particularly with a Bayer CFA like the Mysterium uses.

I shot some tests for a commercial on Hawks and they were truly magnificent. Excellent contrast and gorgeous flare. Very worth considering if your taking the anamorphic route..

and yes, agreed, Sunshine is a masterpiece.. but then Kuchler is a bit of a genius..

I read recently that the Hawks don't flare the way standard 2x squeeze anamorphics do, something about the position of the anamorphic element. I'd love to see some examples of flares from the Hawks, ideally shot on the Red...

The Hawks flare magnificently, I am still blown away with the nature of these lenses and in the hands of a pro DP you can get an incredible variety of flare results.
