  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Has Red come to the UK yet?

Paul,

That sounds like something I would appreciate. I am sure that there will be plenty of teething problems once the Red comes out and we can help by putting our heads together as we will all hit the same issues, depending on config and post. I have access to early serial numbers, not in this country, and will be testing the first cameras to ship. I have links with a soho post house who are going to help with post. I plan to push this baby to see what we can get out of her and see what dynamic range we can get, what the lowlight/highlight issues are and how it responds to over and under exposure.. usual stuff. I also need to test the workflow to see if we can get it up and running for September... Well it pays to be ambitious! If not it's back to DCT for me.

Is everyone looking to dump onto raid array and back up to LTO type system?

Sounds like a good low budget film maker's package You decided not to have the RAW ethernet port factory installed? UK Red Users Club sounds good and from this thread sounds like we have a few enthusiastic film makers to join it. Have you signed up to ReduserUK?

Backup is still something I'm waiting on Mike, with the developments such as LTO4 and different flash memory I don't want to tie myself into anything until as late as possible in some respects.

Flameop runs a post production facility based in Manchester, we've already discussed getting together early on once my camera arrives so feel free to come along and join us then.

BTW that is Stephen Webb's site http://www.redcamera.net/. Though it seems that more UK Red users use this site.

Nothing as yet, when I have a estimated shipping date I will decide. It also depends on whether I have any jobs for when it arrives that require specific items. Lots of variables to decide on really. For example if 64GB flash cards are out in the next few months and are relatively inexpensive I'll probably go with the flash bay over the 320GB red drives and backup to RAID, external HDD's or tape on set.

Thanks for the link to the ReduserUK site; I have just registered. I have another site to keep an eye on every night now. Since ordering my camera my evenings have been spent getting up to speed with the Red technology. By reading as many posts as I can I am learning loads so by the time I get my Red I will hope to have everything post wise, in place. Although a lot can happen between now and 2008 so I am not commiting to any big changes on the hardware side.
I like the simplicity of the Red drive; am I right in assuming that the factory fitted ethernet port will loose the option of the flash drive? I see this as being very useful for reducing the weight so I don't exceed the weight limit of my Steadicam Flyer. I just can't afford to spend out on the Archer; I would much rather spend that on a set of Red primes, oh yes!
 
Anything I can do to help with pipelines etc. I'm in. :)

Were considering buying at least one red-drive for ourselves also.

Got a few "field" raid options also worth considering.

Looking forward to buying a large peli case :)

I've been thinking about field raid options for a while actually. Well if you need a tester for your new RAID product, cough cough... 10%... cough cough hehe.
 
I do! lol.. 4 or 5 disk sata raids at the mo linked via sata card in expansion slot on macbookpro all inside a portable case. So the FW port isn't taken up for red-drive.
Trying to figure out how to get raid 5 as most are on cards or expensive raids. May do a 2x 5 disk mirrored set yet.

Currently an 8disk raid(5) running at 400MBs is looking about £900 but to big really.

I know speed isn't the main priority in field as its backup and also limited to about 200MBs on expansion port sata cards but being able to use them elsewhere.. 2x5disk raids striped would be a bonus usage for us.

Many options still.. though wouldn't like to use a usb compact flash reader!lol..

Picked up final cut studio 2 this aft! Get in!!!!....

I am a flameop.. yes. Well was.. left where I was to start own business with head of 3D from old place :)

Power is something were looking into at the moment. Depends on if it's simply for back-up/archive or if you want to get clever on set, which I do :)

For a large raid I'm looking into mini UPS also... never be to safe! especially with wires all over the place on set and lots of tired people with coffee! lol.

Some of the first cameras will be based out of Axis Films, Shepperton Studios, where there is already a vibrant camera rental operation, with all the support kit and crew you could need, as well as a great real-time 4K DI setup with 18ft digital projection screen (well, I would say it is great as I set it up!).
