  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Has owning a Red helped your career?

Coming from a guy who has student loan debt and has had three car loans (2 paid off), this is a solid investment if you put the work in. Frankly, you can make money from it, much like if you owned a house and rented it. Refer to reason A below, but undoubtably the best investment I've ever made for two simple reasons:

A) I get to use and learn the camera in my down time, or while shooting.

B) It has paid itself off pretty quickly.

If you have the passion, eye, and work ethic, then you'll be fine investing in a Red.

If I was buying today I'd get the Arri simply cuz everyone is a Arri fan boy. People never respect me for my red if anything higher ended folks just make fun of me and it. I own both for now but if my Amira is a cash cow I'd choose mini over weapon. Ask me in six months and I'll tell you what's earning me more...

Absolutely - I've shot many of spots for Cartoon Network, Adult Swim, Weather Channel, CNN, and Michelin precisely because I got the Epic three years ago. They often ask if I shoot 4K. No, I say, 5K Raw. Soon 6K. Yes, there is stiff competition coming from ARRI, Sony, Canon, and BM, but RED still has the edge in resolution, dynamic range, and high frame rates. Perfect for commercials, music videos, and indie films. I hope RED stays price competitive.
