  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Has anyone used mLOGIC mTape LTO-6 drives?

Thanks for pointing that out, Bob. I had to go look at the mLogic site... See, just one more thing I miss out on by not being at NAB. Nice upgrade, nice to see a tape drive that can connect to ANYTHING!

26 days ago I purchased the first gen mTape drive and haven't yet opened the package due to severe lack of time. Now I see that they're releasing the second gen drive next month. Time to decide: Do I return this unit before the 30 day return period expires (in 4 days), or do I just stick with it. From what I can gather I would be paying about $1,000 extra for the new version which basically is just faster and USB 3 compatible. Is it worth it?

EDIT:

After carefully going over the data sheet for the second gen mTape drive I could't find any reference for it being Thunderbolt 2 compatible. Is this correct? So the only difference for $900 extra is USB 3.0?

Ask yourself if the $900~$1000 premium is worth it for also being able to connect via USB3. The new drive is not any faster, same tape mechanism, which is served just fine by Thunderbolt v1.0 and USB3. The new model does upgrade to Thunderbolt v2.0, which means it won't "dumb down" other TB2 peripherals in the chain to v1.0 operational speeds.

The new model is Thunderbolt 2 according to the NAB announcement. This is not specified in their data sheet. I would assume it's TB2 as Intel will (supposedly) only certify new TB devices if they are TB2 compliant.

Just got this update from MLogic about the TB connection.

When we ship mTape Connect in the June timeframe, the unit will be Thunderbolt 2.

Thanks!
