  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Has ANYONE tried putting SSD's into the 320GB or 640GB case???

So yeah I was thinking of how to get a high capacity way to record on the RED ONE that would not be subject to skipping when shooting handheld, etc.

So considering that the 320 and 640 GB drives are simply (2) 2.5" spinning hard drives in a raid configuration, could we open the case and replace them with SSD's?

If it works, we would have a high capacity way to record with NO MOVING PARTS:thumbup:

Since my 640GB drive is out of warranty, I just might give it a shot :)

Don't waste your time. The RAID controller that joins the two drives has a proprietary firmware and so do the HDD's - trying to replace them with anything else will simply not work...
I went through hell trying to figure this out back in the day before the RED-RAM (SSD) was released and I needed a high-capacity non-skipping media for heli shooting...

Skip the hard drive enclosure and go straight for the standard SATA and power cables behind the RED door
(where your CF card module is located). Connect a FAST SSD, Format, and go shoot something! That's what I did.
I had a slower Samsung drive that got me all flavors of 2K. Swapped that out for a faster (smaller 256GB) SSD
And I got up to 4K. It works. I'm working on a external enclosure kinda like the one on the BlackMagic Camera (which I also own).
wish I could upload a picture.

Leroy, you crazy wizard!

I also thought there was a proprietary Lock to disable this possibilities of playing with other harddrives. This was a talk a heard in the glory days of the RED ONE...
Tell us more about your findings as you go! ;-)

Leroy, that's very niceeeeee!
Please show some photo! :)

Holy crap that is awesome!

Which firmware are you on and which drive are you able to get 4k?

how to use newer fast ssds on Epic?

pictures?

pictures?

parts list?
Other folks would love to try to get the 4k results you have gotten..

I think the CFS have a code on the board, also I looked at an SSD install and it looks like their might be a board on it also. If you bypass all of that and hook a drive you juat have to rely on the speed of the drive.. Its gotta be that.. LEROY MIGHT BE OUR HERO.

Please post a photo and more details!! I have the SSD module but use Red Drives because of the cost of the Red SSD's. I hate using the Drives because it's one more box hanging off, another cable, and more weight. Would be great to create a little side module that takes fast SSD's directly.

Really interested in this as well, Currently repairing my MX but will try with a sandisk 480 SSD and get back to you all.

The OCZ drive I used got up to 4K BUT had major dropped frame issues! Sometimes it does 4K sometimes it doesn't.......I will say media is to slow. So there is hope I think to get 4K running smoothly. The write speeds has to be insane for 4k i'm sure. My Blackmagic Camera
while shooting raw eats up SSD like nobodys business and that only @ 2.5K.
I took a bunch of pictures of the install for a couple other users! I'm gonna get the right mix yall just watch and see.

Do you think you could PM me the exact details of the SSD you had that enabled 4K recording? All the drives ive tried did not enable beyond 2K.
