  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Has anyone tried Nvidia Maximus in Premiere CS6 and SpeedGrade?

I am planning to build a workstation maybe next month to edit 48FPS 5K 3D(and 6K after dragon released) in Premiere and SpeedGrade. So I guess I need a robust system, although the budget is a bit limited:nonod:.
My plan is 2*Dell MD1200 for video storage(PLUS 2 SSD for system), 2*2687W CPU. But about the GPU, I wish there could be some advice, how much will the Maximus help for premiere CS6? Will more Teslas give more help in premiere? The recently announced K5000+K10 seemed super powerful according to the data.

Also, is RR very important? RR is expensive even the battle-tested one. One RR is almost enough price for one K5000+K10. I know it is for decoding and compression, but the extra money I can upgrade the main board and CPU to new level(4*E5-4650 is not far away), so which choice will be better? Also, is it true that CUDA do nothing on R3D decoding?

Also the monitor, I wish to use two 27 LCD, one High definition for software, maybe dell U2713HM, one 3D 1920*1080, maybe ASUS VG278H-C for 3D preview, is that OK?

After carefully read many post, I found CUDA really do nothing on R3D decoding, so it seemed maximus is kind of overkilling to my needs. Now I still have a confusing point, it is about the speed grade, adobe said "Dedicated GPU card with at least 1GB VRAM (NVIDIA Quadro 4000, 5000, or 6000 recommended)" , does that mean I should have at least 2 cards? And can GTX680 perform well on it? Or should I buy a gtx and a quadro6000?I also found that Speedgrade use openGL, so should I choose GTX680+HD7970(which is the fastest OpenGL I know)?

If you are serious on speedgrade. U should get the quadro version with nvidia sdi otherwise you dont really have anything. Nobody grade without proper reference monitor which needs sdi input. U only need one card for speedgrade. Minimum quadro 4000. Thats all depends on your budget.

Thank You Rivaic! I have to say I am quite new on grading(and also new on EPIC and almost everything:blush:), is SDI monitoring so important? Quadro6000 is not very expensive in Beijing, about 1.5K USD, while SDI is 3.5K (BTW, RR is very expensive here, nearly 8K), but I read some posts said quadro6000 is not very fast, 7970 and GTX680 will be faster. Since I actually care more on speed than quality (I will shot on 5K, 48FPS and 3D maybe with HDRX and 6K after dragon was released) , isn't Dell 27' monitor enough? I thought I will use SpeedGrade for 3D output and speedgrade is in the bundle for free (or can that output be achieved by only premiere?) Also I may made the final grading in a studio with Davinci Resolve (that will be free because I will do lots of VFX there).

Dont mix up between GUI and reference monitoring. Based on your post i can tell that u do commercial work not hobby. But then if u dont have any proper reference monitor, how are u going to do the grading. By using non quadro card, u will not be able to do output sdi. U might need quadro with gtx combo if u want to do it with davinci as well. But thats under exception if you have proper reference monitor, if not dont bother

One can buy a GTX580 or 570 (macvidcards if Mac) for GUI/CUDA and something like a Blackmagic DeckLink for SDI monitoring and come out MUCH cheaper and with higher performance. The 6000 is only better on Double Precision, but that is seldom used and apparently only used for things like circuit design and hard science. I am thinking about the DeckLink 4K Extreme if it is out soon and reliable. AJA cards are perhaps even better than the DeckLink cards and are priced higher.

Good Luck,
Robert A. Ober

Great, Decklink SDI only $400. 4K extreme is 1.6K here (already some in store) , all much cheaper than Quadro SDI. Thank you Robert!
There's an interesting thing here, why people stick to SDI while HDMI and DisplayPort are newer protocol and have definitely better performance and also accurate digital color? You can see 4K extreme support HDMI for all kinds of format(10Gb), and need DUAL-SDI(2*3Gb) to support 4K. Epic also has HDMI.
