Has anyone tested Sandisk Extreme Pro 64GB card?

90mb/s seems fast enough for RED.

Thanks.

It came out today, so i guess not. But I thought you could only use Red CF's. Even even if that is the case it might be good news for what may happen with future Red CF's...

It seems they really are available today:

64GB $700: http://www.buydig.com/shop/product....&utm_campaign=SDCFXP064GA91&sku=SDCFXP064GA91

And the smaller versions with the same speed:

16GB $250: http://www.buydig.com/shop/product....&utm_campaign=SDCFXP016GA91&sku=SDCFXP016GA91
32GB $400: http://www.buydig.com/shop/product....&utm_campaign=SDCFXP032GA91&sku=SDCFXP032GA91

Yeah it's pretty new tho. I had pleasant experience of using Lexar 8GB CF, hope Sandisk does the same work as RED cards. RED doesn't have 64GB yet, does it?

Not yet,

I haven't seen anything about 64GB, but 32 GB cards will be shipping soon.

Recall that current cards will not support the full data rates for the Epic.

Best

But a 90MB/s card seems to be enough for something like a RC60 or so, if they developed that RedCode step. I wonder what red codes they are planning on creating or if it is just the ones they announced.

I would assume something like a RC60 might be enough for a little bit of 5k overcranking, like say 48fps? I have no idea, and 48fps might be way too much, but even if just 30fps, or less even... even if just strictly 24fps!

Just dreaming a little here, because coupled with 64GB capacity it sounds like a very decent place to be if what you need is the smallest and lightest camera ever.

The classic problem is CF cards not being fast enough for sustained write speeds. We are always looking and developing new bigger cards because we all want them. They just have to be fast enough. Bigger cards is always the 1st step to bigger/faster cards.

Its a shame, but I am sure we can trust that a fast enough card won't go unnoticed by your team. Thanks for letting us know, and sorry for the incessant "are we there yet". :)

Jim: does the firmware let us test these for ourselves, my understanding is it either locks it out or limits to lower resolutions? I really wish there was some way to override this and make some evaluations of the performance and risk ourselves as this is really a big deal for us underwater shooters. If we can get close to 20 minutes recording we can eliminate the drive which reduces size of the housing as well as heat which is a real issue with Redone.

Is the issue of write performance on these cards random, or more on say five minute or more long takes?

PS Since I'm on the East coast, you can see I'm losing sleep over this... :)

Not sure if this has been asked yet. Will slower cards work if we are just taking a still? Will sustained data rate matter (even at higher resolutions) if we are taking single frames or just a few frames (not the bursts of 100s)?

If this has been discussed could someone point me in the direction of that thread?

Thanks!

Jim, have you guys tested this card? 90 seems fast enough (on paper, I realize)

and 32gb for $400 seems perfect

Sounds to me like RED does some "Graeme Magic" to their cards, thought I remember reading that somewhere too. Hence the higher price.

I don't think RED is just rebranding OEM cards, but actually developing them.

Like memory, I also think the "grade" of materials used in CF cards, (much like P2 solid state cards) also has a LOT to do with pricing.

True statements on the 16gb, not on the 8gb. The 8 is just a Lexar 300 with a sticker.

I understand that Red tried all these cards and none of them worked, but we've a whole new crop of fast cards (such as these 90MBs), one of them has to work

I think they found 32GB cards but they are too expensive to release I'm guessing, so hopefully by the time more Epic-X details drop the 32GB will drop (if not I'm begging before end of 2009 we get a 32GB card)

thanks Shawn- fingers crossed.

Hoping and waiting ...

$250 for the 16GB is at the right price point / size for most of what I do. 16GB is roughly the same as a 1000' mag. More the adequate for a lot of situations. Although the 32GB card would come in handy for some of those long interviews where people just ramble ...

How does RED test their cards or third party cards. Very curious? I read they test the attach/detach so many thousand times.

What software or hardware do they do this.

Since I'm a low budget guy I don't mind using the cheapo cards just for 24fps and having some RED cards for highs speed.

It is not just being limited to 24fps- with any non-RD cards you are limited to 2k as well.
