Hi,

I'm just curious if anyone has sold a 300mm Red Lens (older version) her on RedUser in the last 30 days. If so, what was the sale price. I am interested in this lens but don't want to pay more than market value (which I think is about $2,500 considering the supply/demand curve) but sellers keep saying my offer is too low because of original purchase price.

If there are 10 of these for sale and none of them are selling for the $3,500+ asking prices, then they just aren't worth that much in the free market.

Please advise,

just be patient,
when some of the equipment bought by loans had to be paid back, you will see stuff cheaper.

like a wise man said

be fearful when everyone is greedy, and be greedy when everyone has fear :)

Lol, are you serious? You think a $5000 piece of glass is now worth $2500? I saw one person selling it for $4000. 20% off is a lot for glass. It's an amazing lens that will be every bit as good on all future versions of Epic/Scarlet.

oh, and about the whole 'free market' thing. Just because in a small pool they don't flip fast, doesn't mean it's not worth it. Times are tough, people are holding purse strings. There's a big difference between what something is ultimately worth vs what you'd have to drop the price to if you need cash NOW.

this free market thing made a 10 k usd lens set of primes running for 25k usd right now.
RED Glas is not that popular in the 2nd hand market.

I have one for sale but am in no rush to sell it so low ball offers don't interest me.

Like Shawn said, its all comes down to how much you need the cash as to what price you'll take.

The 300mm is a fantastic lens and will produce great images for a long time.
I don't use it that much as my style of shooting at the moment is mainly commercials so my Zeiss set gets used the most.

First. I respect you Shawn. But, I'm curious why you think my appraisal is laughable. ;)

When $1M homes are selling for $500,000, DELL stock is selling for 1/3 of it's 52-week high and freelancers are willing to work for half their normal rate, why is it so surprising that a discontinued lens (casing) in which supply exceeds demand could drop 50% in value. I'm not saying its' not an amazing lens, I am just saying that DELL is significantly more amazing than that lens yet investors are only willing to pay 30 cents on the dollar for a share of stock. Think about it. Value is only what someone is willing to pay.

I'm still waiting for someone to respond to my original question.

BTW, if you don't like DELL, pick a company you do like, chances are its' stock dropped 50% since that lens first came out.

Don't be too sure about that. The value of second-hand 18-50s has been going up since I bought mine. The RED 300mm (both versions) are very nice. I would say that a low offer for the lens would be about $3750. I've seen them sell for more than that and recently too.

Sorry shooter, but I think your $2500 offer is too low to be realistic. But if you're not in a hurry, you may get lucky by being patient... With the global economic slump we're in, someone is going to need to sell one of these ASAP at some point, even if they take a huge hit. The over-inflated prices on prime sets have already started falling and I'm beginning to see more sets of primes for sale. It's only a matter of time before the glass market shifts in favor of the buyers.

Once people get past all the bad press about the 18-50 (mostly) and "RED glass" and actually use the lenses seriously, they realize they're pretty darn good for the money, considering the alternatives out there.

When $1M homes are selling for $500,000,

Where's this at? I want to buy a few of those. I'm serious. On the other hand, I have no trouble finding $600K homes that people paid $1M for and are now selling at a loss. Wooops.

Has anyone compared the 300mm v1 and v2/PRO?

I assume the optics are the same... and I've only seen positive reports on the mechanics of the first version; is the Pro even better, smoother, butterier?

Or is it only cosmetic differences, to match the upcoming Red primes?

shooter is always on the hunt for a bargain.

Personally I'd say $3800 is a fair price for the 300mm but of course people always want to spend as little as possible.

I have rarely seen nearly new glass of any brand sell at a 50% discount. Not in dslr world and certainly not in cine glass world. So perhaps your expectations are not yet aligned with marketplace realities.

Right. That's why I am looking for someone whose expectations ARE aligned with marketplace realities and has therefore paid "more" than $2,500 for the older version Red 300mm lens in the past 60 days. As soon as a buyer or seller steps up and either says they sold or bought one for more than I think it's worth, that will prove me wrong and I'll gladly change my value assessment. ;)

Careful Rory. I gave you a free pass a couple weeks ago on something you don't want me to spell out here. ;)

Shooter, are you referring to the JL Cooper I had for sale.

Having exchanged endless emails with you and you beating me down on price you took your time paying and someone else step up and purchased it putting their money where they mouth was.

You're loud mate, I'll give you that.

Just correcting the facts.

Endless emails? Nice try "mate".

Here are the facts:

You were asking $1,950. I offered you $1,500. Same day we agreed to $1,625 and you said "You have a deal". You immediately accepted my offer BUT You were busy with a shoot and said you couldn't ship till next week. Sunday at 3pm I asked if you were back from shoot and if you could ship that week. You replied at 5pm saying "I'll ship out Monday (tomorrow)" and gave me your PayPal email address. I was out with Family. At 10pm that night when I checked my email again, you sent a second email saying "Sorry but I just received payment from another buyer".

That's just not cool and I had planned on warning folks about doing business with you but decided to keep quiet. When you agree to a price to sell something and send a PayPal invoice, you should definitely give someone more than 5 hours to make the payment. You also shouldn't have told two people to pay you at the same time.

Sure I'm loud when someone makes false accusations that need to be corrected.

shooter

your a gem mate. you posted this thread almost immediately after PMing me offering less than 2500 for a near perfect 300mm I put up for sale (an offer I felt was a bit of an insult).

Just because you think it's only worth that doesn't make it so and this thread seems to be your way of artificially driving the price down. I'm all for bargain hunting but there is a big difference between that and being a cheapskate.

BTW - my 300mm is still for sale at US$3200 which I think is a pretty fair deal if anyone is interested.
