  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Has anyone shot with Red Epic for 360 degree (3D) photo project?

OK, cool...I also do this type of photography. Usually we use a still camera and capture individual frames such as 24 frames per 360 degree rotation. Then they get extensively retouched in Photoshop. We do automobile photography. Check out this one we did for Isuzu:

There are many ways to accomplish this. We use a manual turn table. If your product is not too big you can use a motorized turn table. If you need very smooth rotations say 72 angles per rotation you can also use a video camera. There are software and hardware solutions that can make this easier.

Tell me more and I would be glad to share some thoughts.

Yeah, we did a ton of these for the Windows 8 launch. Ultimately it would have been way cheaper, faster and better to do as a 3D rendering. It's incredibly difficult to light for a full 360 degree rotation. And you will need to shoot on green if you don't want just a white background which means tons of spill control and cleaning up reflections. Also depending on what you're shooting you also have to paint out rigs etc. If you want a really high quality rotation (say every degree) then that's a ton of FX work.

If you mean how does shooting it on RED vs 5D go? It's pretty much the same. It's easier on RED in my opinion since you can just use a motorized lazy Susan and let the camera roll. No need to move it carefully one degree at a time.
