  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Has anyone shot a Holi?

Unless my memory is seriously failing me, I'm pretty sure Ketch once showed me photos from a Holi he shot once, I'm not sure if it was just pictures though. Paging Ketch Rossi!

EDIT: Or was it Bob Gundu? (maybe it was both?)

EDIT #2: Found this

We just celebrated Holi here in India on 6th March. The splash bag is a good and elegant idea. If not, you can create a similar contraption. In such situations when you don't have it, screw a UV/ND filter infront of the camera just for protection and using a large ziplock bag will also do. If nothing works, just use a Go Pro 4 in its housing. :)

Hey Ces,

Yeah you got it,

My Holi stuff is coming via NAB... Got 40LB of Holi Powder... The A-RED ewamarine Splash Bag UW Housing, and the RPP 300mm for shoots on open Cam against wind... :)

BTS will be shot with it as well... See everyone at NAB... :)

had that happen.. rental where the rentee ran off through the thick of it; leaving the assistent I provided flabbergasted as they had just made an agreement that that would not happen.

had the whole rig in a rainprotection cover just to be sure. that it still took 2 days of intensive cleaning the camera and lens (weather sealed canon provided by the customer luckily) and a trip
to the UK to have the camera fully examined should say enough. the raincover was machine washable. took two complete programs.. still is slightly yellow/green under the 'right' light.

I think that during my upgrade to dragon there would have been some suprprises left for the tech.

on the other hand; the air duct for cooling goes through the brain and is completely sealed from the innards..

guess i was lucky but no more holi for me..

best
Joost

I was just in Varanasi for Holi. I shot it with Gopro 4 in it's housing. They spray ink and dye everywhere, the camera has to be protected well.
I also shot the Shiva festival, with the Gopro on a 3 axis stabilizer on a 6 foot boom. A Red would have been far far too bulky to get the shots I got. The crowds make it very hard to move around with such a 'studio' camera.
The rest of the trip was shot GH4 on a 3 axis stabilizer and a pocketable LX100. All UHD taking cameras.
The two stabilized cameras fit inside a small backpack. That's two 3 axis mounted cameras in one *small* backpack.
The Red stayed home and my back is very grateful for it.

The guys at Variable shot this a couple years back with a Phantom Flex.

From Vimeo:

"We created a custom glass lens filter which we were able to quickly swap out if needed.
We also used a dust cover and lots of garbage bags to protect the camera.
Let's just say there were a few close calls... Gotta take risks to create something unique!"

I had the opportunity to hear the filmmaker talk for an hour about his experiences shooting holi. The film (and the musical score) is absolutely amazing; http://www.amazon.com/Radhe-Rite-Holi-DVD/dp/B00NJADERO

He used disposable Canon 5D2 cameras. There were several times when things got very intense, like security guards threatening him and his gear, but he was a master of harnessing the energy of the event and made things work in his favor.

Very sad and disturbing news.

Who knew that the Holi powder was flammable?

Pray for those injured.

The organic/food based/cornflour powder is all flammable & potentially susceptible to powder explosion. Basically it's a fuel-air mix waiting for an ignition source & the right fuel-air ratio.

This danger has been around since sawmills and flour mills have existed. Spray paint rooms likewise.

Chalk/mineral based ones aren't explosive, but are probably carcinogenic for your lungs!

I personally think Holi powder events are plain stupid, even if they are fun to participate in.
