  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Has anyone actually played back the "H" proxy in RT?

Doing some more playing with it and checking a few things suggest by Nate, I'm getting some pretty darn good results now.

I turned off the "Scrub High Quality" and my timeline was custom to match resolution and settings of the _M proxies (probably why they played the smoothest). I switched over to ProRes and changed timeline settings to match the _H proxies. I'm now playing back 4K 2:1 29.97 _H proxies perfectly smooth. I guess I just had to spend a few minutes to try a few things and get it right.

Jeff,
Yes, that's the ticket! Some of our machines ask you what settings to use when you drag a clip in and then they work really well. For some reason, others do not ask and you have to manually set everything to exactly match the proxy clip except for the codec. Then it's magic!

Rob is going to pop in here soon and say "well, I showed you this months ago, Nate". It's true he showed me the Low setting, but we didn't try it with _H files, I don't think.

One caveat. I loaded my music vid then, changed everything up to these new settings, and I only get smooth playback in my timeline intermittently. I'm wondering if it's leaning now on the Offline RT/RAM deal...as it's choking in a manner similar in the way Offline RT does when it's RAM starved. I only have 3GB RAM.

I messed around a little bit with the sequence settings.

Here's the flow:

Took 4K .h proxies from either RedAlert or from camera.
Created ProResHD sequence 1080P.
Droped clips on the timeline and adjusted the playback and scrub setting for speed.
Edit
Scaled the clips to fill the frame and beyond.
Render

Looks as if you can scale up (to 4K) without interpolating because of the proxy file referencing the 4k file.
You have all the resolution of 4k before you hit the wall (over 400% scale with 1080HD).
Overall, image looks pretty good.

Please,
can anyone confirm that QT 7.4.1 does definately not work with RED Reference Movies in FCP. I'm getting a red bar in FCP but viewing in QT does work although not completely smooth.

Going back to 7.31 is possible (did it and went back to 7.41) but screws up other things.

Thanks a lot,

Hans

I've flipped back and forth between 7.3.1 and 7.4.1 on a new Mac Pro here. Functionality is the same between the two in FCP. I haven't had any problems with camera generated QT's. 7.4.1 is a lot more stable on this system.

The only thing that 7.3.1 does for me is smoother playback in the QT player, but it's still not perfectly smooth. I get perfectly smooth playback of QT proxies in FCP as long as I match the timeline settings to the clip settings.

It also depends on your system... It seems a quad-core 2.6GHz or better is needed to consistently do _H proxies in real-time. Make sure you have enough RAM too. FCP is still 32bit, but it doesn't mind having 2~3GB of its own to use. I hope Apple gives us a 64bit update to the pro apps with their next release. Fast drives help a lot too... I've noticed that a fast RAID does wonders for rendering out of REDCINE.

Yeah, I forgot to mention, I'm completely up to date on my system and Quicktime, on a recent clean install. But even before then, I was completely up to date and running R3Ds and Redcine without issue.

I try not to go mucking around with rolling back versions of this or that, because I always wind up with problems (but that's probably just me)...you know, components of differing versions getting mixed up, etc.

By the way, the Low Quality tab bit is very much mentioned on the download page for the QT component. But I think the tidbit that really makes the difference as well is turning off Scrub High Quality.

Thanks a lot, much appreciated!

Ok, the QT 7.41 issue is clear. Still I get only full render (red bar) in FCP, not even the orange bar. I rebuild my system from the scratch and did not upgrade QT higher than QT 7.3.1.

Timeline is set to what FCP creates if you drag a r3d clip into the timeline. I used the m-proxy (1025:512) of a 4K 2:1 .r3d file. Codec is ProRes. RT set to dynamic, Playback quality low.

My system: MacPro8 3.0GHZ Nvidia 5600fx. OSX 10.5.2, QT 7.3.1

What do I wrong?

Hans

Sidenote: REDCine works as aspected and also the QT Player.
