I'm considering upgrades to my editing suite, but find it hard to find solid information on new hardware and how it performs on export tasks.
My primaruy goal is to
1. Have a faster system to increase speeds when color correcting or applying effects in premiere (ye ye, I sometimes use After effects or Speedgrade as well)
2. Decrease final rendering/export times. A high-bitrate h.264 file in full 2k seems to be among my favorite exports these days..
I can't, or don't want to, afford to buy the very newest components. I usually prefer to look at what's been on the market for a year or so. It seems to start paying of in terme of value for money that way. However, there's still so many ways to go..
What would be really useful is to have some conception what new components would do in terms of performance. My current system (detailed below) does about 1min every hour of color graded material. (rgb curves, 3-way cc, maybe som magic bullet looks, unsharpen mask)
Graphics card: Currently GeForce GTX 460
- When buying this it was all about cuda engines. What should I look for now? Which card is good and why?
CPU: Intel i7 920 (2,66GHz) (I think..I can check later)
- What's a good deal atm?
- Is some CPUs better suited to r3d rendering?
RAM: Kingston Hyper-X DDR 24GB
- Is speed of RAM really important for rendering?
The future: Networked rendering?
Can media encoder do networked rendering? It's something to consider when upgrading - if it's effective enough?
My current Hightechpoint RAID sucks, so I might consider a NAS at some point.
