  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Hardware & Software Tech Specs? RAW PORT™ Option???

Hey Jared, fyi, the RAW PORT option is still listed as an option on the 'Tech Specs' page and the 'Format Options' page.

hey Galexander, The RAW PORT has been discontinued due to lack of demand and interest, we are developing a more viable (and affordable) solution that everyone should be more excited about, and eliminated the need for an expensive ($200,000) external recording box.

The RAW PORT has been removed from the Red Store for awhile now.

Jarred, just out of interest - will the replacement version of the RAW port option still mean you can't have any flash recording options like CF & SSD?

David Wyatt.

We had the Raw port planned for our camera coming later only to be able to get the higher frames rates both in 2k and 4k as they are very useful in commercial production. Hopefully a solution to use them will be available soon (and if it's not uncompressed the better).

Thanks,

hi,
thanks for that. does this mean you're considering a 10Gige solution? or the new 1394 protocols which support 3.2Gb/s?

from the workflow diagrams, there looks to be a way to go directly from the camera/sensor to data acquisition and storage on a PC/Mac instead of a CF or 320Gb hd.

yeah.. that seems to always happen, that poor Format Options page always is the last page to get the love.

ill let Ryan know, thanks man.

Device Interface

hi,

after reading a few more threads about workflows, codecs, etc, what i'd like to do is access the data stream directly from the Red. i will write my own device driver, codecs.

i'd like a technical doc on interfacing.

thanks!

Well... there that goes! At least there's going to be some other solution versus no solution at all. I've said many times that the RAW Port was on my list of needs just for the higher frame rates alone. It's also a big relief that I won't have to worry about a big expensive fibre channel RAID array to record to, although I did get the 4gb Fibre channel card for my Mac Pro.

I'm hoping whatever this new replacement solution is will be announced at NAB 2008? Hmmm?

I have a feeling they may have found a way to get better compression and more bandwidth out of the pathway.

That coupled with the RED FLASH DRIVE, and perhaps some interesting pixie magic (using the CF card as a buffer??), could make user-selectable compression recorded onboard a possibility.

:sorcerer:

HD-SDI/data input Ultra-quality redcode encoder box? :D:D:D

...(that's my guess/request...oh to bypass the HDV encoding on the Canon cam)

When you're on it, Jarred, the accessories page is severely out of date too. :shifty:

Does "more viable and affordable" mean 4.5K/60 to CF/SSD?

Things are getting better and better...

Varispeed in 4K and 2540p?

Please, please, please, please, please, please, please :).

My bet has been the dual HD-SDI as a dataport for a while....

What else can it be used for if we cannot get 1080 4:4:4

Monitors (and decks) can easily be linked from a single port over SDI...

I would like there to be a software based recording solution, though...

FYI-

The RAW Port option has been removed from the Tech Specs and Format Options page. If you ever notice an error on the website, feel free to post it, PM me, or email me (ryan@red).

FYI-

There's also a full new accessories section that is very nearly complete.
I don't have an ETA just yet, but soon...

Ryan, while you're at it, you may as well delete the "Optical Fiber 300ft Cable" from the "Digital Storage" and "Cables" sections. The cable was only useful for the RAW Data Port option.

I sure hope this means some option with a much higher bitrate (lower compression ratio).
