Hardrive and timecode

If you use the hardrive to record to can you remove it and then connect it again and keep recording, or do you have to format the drive. In other words does the material append on the disk...

Also is there a timecode signal in the HDMI output?

What Stuart said, plus: Don't delete material and then plug the drive back in to record. If you delete anything, then reformat.
