  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Hard restarted my mac and its been super laggy ever since even after a rebuild

It hung up like last week, did a hard restart and it was full of problems, ran all the scans and verify (which showed problems), reinstalled Lion still had issues, installed Mavericks, still had issue, wiped the drive today and reinstalled Macericks again and still is laggy. For instance CS5 is taking me 350+ minutes to install...i wish i were kidding but i have turned on the machine and it taken 45 mins or 20 mins even a few times since this issue started so I'm gonna take it to applecare but if possible I'm gonna try to stay up all night to finish a job I'm in the middle of when I'm done tinkering and can actually work again.

so i figure the entire wipe of the drive rules out OS corruption issues or virus.. so i am leaning towards hardware failure of some sort. i kind of hope its the drive since i'll keep on cranking then easily on a new one but i am guessing it may very well be another part of the mac and i should take it in to verify if this is the case. i literally just need to move some clips and export something to youtube and then I'm gonna give up and take it into apple, but was wondering what your thoughts are on where the failure might lie before i am computer less and internet less for who knows how long...

What kind of Mac is it? Also, have you tried another hard drive to rule out a bad one?

Jeff K may have a better suggestion but I've been using Tech Tool 7 for some of my system diagnostics. I use Disk Warrior for certain things as well. And then there are the many under the hood diagnostics/repair as well.

apple support online told me to try the built in apple hardware test, which i am going to do in another 2 hours when CS5 is installed, the 360 minute install time seems to be accurate right now, and its killing me lol... I'm using a core 2 duo not a xeon, so its kind of throw away tech unless the hard drive is at fault.. I'm gonna run this test and post an update...im kinda hoping its something major so i can justify getting a new machine anyway, but this thing has served me very well until now

late 09 mac mini... but its been running great til that lousy restart! i mean everything ran as good as the xeons i use minus the processing power

To me this sounds like your hard drive is failing. The hard Hang that you initially rebooted from was probably an I/O system timeout, and the subsequent errors look like symptoms of excessive I/O retries.

I have a mac mini server that did something similar. I replaced the original 500gb drive with a 750GB hybrid Momentus XT.

Try booting from an external hard drive and see if you still have performance problems.

based on the performance you describe, even if you finish your install, you won't be able to get anything done with CS5.

the drive would be excellent news since id grab an SSD and just rock out even faster! the controller, not so much...still got a lot of wait time on this install...ive never done an apple hardware test before they sent me this link, and I'm gonna try to see if maybe it will give me any insight as well... i don't have an external drive with an os on it, but i can change that if needed to run your test..

the weird thing is i somehow got through it on this whole job...cs5 wasn't slow, just start ups, and the net acting up a bit... cs5 strangely was running the same as usual, prior to me erasing my drive this morning and reinstalling stuff all day to try and diagnose this...i thought for sure this was all software related but obviously now am not so sure

that install aint going anywhere fast, and disc utility says the drives failing, so i just ordered an SSD and am gonna check with apple tomorrow to verify if its really a drive down or the controller
