  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

hard drives vs. processor vs. GPU whcih affecst speed most?

I am wondering - if all I want is to edit 4.5K R3Ds without a hitch, what do I really need in CS5?

We just do straight cuts here of graded footage - nothing else - no need whatsoever to create layered windows of 9 video feeds (Who does this? Why? Isn't this kind of 90s-ish? Anyway, I digress...) But, despite an approved cuda card, 4K usually fine (at 1/4 or 1.8) 4.5 not always fine, not even at 1/16.

Hmmm... Wondering where the problem is, how to fix.

We have a quad core.

You forgot RAM. Max out your RAM. I've also got the nVidia GTX 480 and I can tell you that card absolutely screams. :-)

For 8 videos, your bottleneck is most certainly your HDD. What you need is fast SSDs in RAID0.

9 x REDCODE 42 files at full blast is 378 MB/s. HDD will only get you to 150 MB/s in RAID, or so. You can see how having a single HDD can be a massive bottleneck. Fast SSDs in RAID0 will get you to 500 MB/s.

And, yes, RAM can also play a part. But only if you have the storage to match.

You could also build a RAID5 with 6 drives. That would cost the same as SDDs and have much more storage space.

Thanks guys! So you think the bottleneck is the drives?

RAM never goes beyond a fraction of available...

We are using a GTX 285. Is this sufficient? Or is a better card needed (again, for just single stream Red footage, with some color corrects applied. All real VFX is not done here.)

If we have a quad core, might the processor be the problem? It doesn;t seem to peak, ever.... Am I missing something?

Any specific raid housings been used with success with good price/performance ratios?

Do you connect via USB 3 or e-Sata?

For what it's worth, I was responding to the post title. I agree with those above regarding doing 8 streams in realtime: you need the drives. Get a disk utility and start measuring bandwidth, then eliminating bottlenecks until you reach your target speed.

It's the CPU that's killing you.

Look at your CPU monitor I bet it's maxed out. Your video card is going to help multiple layers of FX and color. Fast hard drives are needed for multiple streams of video, but that's not your problem.

More ram can never hurt but I doubt it's maxed out if you've got at least 6 gigs.

If Premiere supported RedRocket that would be a solution (need to verify it actually handles 4.5K FULL realtime. It may be limited to 4K - I don't know)

Like has been said, the bottleneck is clearly the hard drive. I have mentioned the maths before. If your hard drive can only read one or two streams, your other components have it easy waiting for the hard drive to catch up. That is why your CPU and RAM don't peak.

The debayer process is still CPU-exclusive, for now. So, your GPU is sitting idle while we are waiting for the hard drive to read all the files. Of course, it comes alive when you have some color correction or other GPU accelerated plugins checked. But, first of all, your hard drive needs to read all the files!

Finally, I would strongly recommend using internal RAID. Just connect two SSDs to your motherboard directly, and setup RAID0 in the BIOS. If you want redundancy, add an extra (i.e. 3 SSDs) for RAID5. You don't have to spend exorbitant amounts on external RAID enclosures, and besides, 500 MB/s is beyond the capabilities of both eSATA and USB 3.0. You don't want another superficial bottleneck there. SSDs in RAID will boost your read speed from about 70 MB/s for a single HDD to 500 MB/s. Enough to curb the massive bottleneck, and sufficient for the 380 MB/s you need to read 9 REDCODE 42 streams at full blast.

Obviously, you didn't read Rob's post above. He clearly states that the CPU doesn't peak.

Thank you Subhapip.

I am very grateful for your exceedingly helpful responses in these forums.

He also says that he does NOT need 9 streams of video.

Those who made mistakes - no sweat at all - I really appreciate all those who shared their expertise.

Thanks again.
