  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Hands on review of Raven after 3 music videos.

Thanks, Matt!

To my knowledge this is not exactly the case. From what I have heard the "auto" refers to the BS doing a few exposures for the given shutter and temp. But when you jump extremes you still need to black shade. I live in Phoenix, AZ so when shooting outside in 105 degree heat, from a black shade done in a 75 degree air conditioned home, that is quite a jump in sensor temps.

Once I created about 4 black shade profiles I was good to go for most of my circumstances.

Correct, still need to blackshade for tempature changes, just not framerates for the most part

Thanks for the great report there.....but I'm troubled by the report on the Red Touch...so I'm going to be spending $1,450.00 on a sub-par, blurry display with focus peaking that doesn't seem to work correctly??? :(

Also, since you used the SmallHD 701/501, was the focus peaking easier to use vs the Red Touch?

As for the red monitors, try this. In the look tab turn the sharpness up to 15. Done. This setting does affect the monitor outputs downstream so if you use it you need to make sure that your other client monitors don't have any sharpness applied . Also, in play back the sharpness setting is deactivated Fyi

So I am pretty disappointed in the SmallHD 701/501. The image is about 1 stop darker than the RED monitor. I have tried every setting to figure it out, updated firmware and searched google. Haven't found anyone talking about it. It's a real bummer because I do like SmallHD but I would not trust the values from the monitor. The peaking though is far better since they have colored edge peaking and not just sharpening.

Yes, with my raven I have experienced the same thing, the red touch 4.7 is pretty bad IMO... not bright enough, it looks soft even when it's actually spot on with external monitors + the focus peaking is weak. Compared with the sony focus peaking, it's a joke. Also auto focus with canon lenses is unuseable.

Probabaly the processing power difference between the weapon / dragon, but the delay is really bad when changing frame rates, fstop etc... on the red touch. Just isn't snappy

Odd I find my LCD to be pretty responsive the only problem I have is that it gets a little hot. Other than that I get true to life colors and snappy responses, I also have no problem with the focusing assist. I don't actually love the colored lines all over the monitor, once I have focus I turn it off so I like the way RED implements it. The major problem I have with the LCD though is that sometimes its hard to switch over to playback and vice versa because the icons in the bottom corner and I have fat fingers lol.
