Hi all,

We've had a Red for a while and have been looking for a simple handle that is taller, lighter and easier to get a good balance with regardless of whether the camera has a small prime or a big zoom on it. Working with a friend who helps us out with odd parts we came up with something that works well for us and thought we would offer it to others if anyone is interested.

Basically, we wanted something that was:

1. Fairly high up so we could put a small mixer or wireless on the ET top cheeese and still get our hands around it. We had found the existing Red handle solution to be much to close to easily grasp when you're moving fast. (you can see our MixPre mounted beneath the handle in at least one of the pictures)

2. Easy to get a wide grip on (we find we need to have one hand on the handle in front of the front top mount sometimes to have it balance easily when we have a big lens on the camera).

3. Be light, easy to break down for travel, etc.

4. Relatively inexpensive.

We decided to use a 19mm rod for the main grip area, since we can use a 12" to just run the length between the top mounts of the camera or a 18" if we want more of an overhang. Initially we planned to wrap the rod for better grip, but this has worked fine so far. It also gives us a 19mm rod on top that we think will be a possible mounting point for the Viewfactor motors or other lens control motors...

Below are a few pictures of our camera with the prototype we used during a recent shoot in Glacier National Park, plus the revised model we plan to have made up. In the final version all screws will be recessed and there are two 1/4 20 holes on each bracket to mount stuff on.

If people are interested we will have a bunch made up and if not we'll just have them made for ourselves. We would just offer the brackets and you could buy whatever 19mm rod you wanted for the actual handle piece. I expect these should run under $200/set, with the final price depending on how many we have made up, etc.

Please send us an email at redhandler@gmail.com if you are interested and we'll figure out timing and cost.

Thanks,
Walter

Looking at your prototype I suggest you call it something like "The #1 Mounting Solution" or "The 1 mount you'll ever need!"

I'd be interested in a 15mm version.

Here is another handle option from ET.. although I like that there more options. Nice work!
