Hey All,

Had a quick question.

Plan on mounting my Epic on Red's Quickrelease system with the lightweight matte box and follow focus sitting on an Epic Modular Assault Plate utilizing the 15mm lightweight configuration.

Has anyone done this same setup and have any recommendations for a handheld rig (shoulder mount/handles)?

Would be very curious!

Thanks!!

Andy

I would be willing to bet that the OConnor Universal Baseplate would line up an Epic with 15mm LWS support rods ....

We have yet to try it out.

OK!

The reason why I ask is because I have no idea where a shoulder mount would go or if anyone has been engineering things this way.

I mean, is the only function of the quickrelease to switch between tripods?

There has to be a way to utilize the 15mm lw setup for some form of shoulder mounted handheld, right?

That's why I saw the quick release to be amazing.

I hope so.

Or maybe someone create a shoulder mount that can snap into the base of the Mounting Plate (Epic)?

Any quick release users out there have any insight?

As it stands right now, if I want to go handheld, I'd probably have to mount my rig off the studio platform, right?

That's not quick release!

Have you looked at the Clutch? It is a shoulder mount system designed to work with RED's Quick Release.

Or, something like the ET Mantis with one of RED's Quick Release Dovetail Platforms.

Jamison,

Yea, I did see them, but I was hoping of something even lighter? On the shoulder and the wallet?

They both are amazing and I would love to get The Clutch, but just something that could be even faster?

The clutch would add another set of rails... I don't know, I just was wondering if there was a bracket with handles and a shoulder mount to slide onto the bottom of the release.

Or are you basically saying I just have to drop a lot of cash on this one?

Thanks!

Andy

Andy, i see where you are going, that's the same thing i'm looking for. A setup that i click on my tripod and works good, and then quick release it, and have a handheld setup. If you look at above picture, there is a shoulder pad attached to something that looks like the quick release system, but i'm not sure how this works, but something like that is what you're searching for right?

You don't have to use the 19mm rails that come with the Clutch. I only use a single 6" rod to hold the chest pad on. 15mm LWS rods will be attached to the camera with the Modular Assault Plate. With only the one short rod you don't have them getting in the way of your 15mm LWS setup.

@Jarek, yea I totally get you. I'm not saying the product is bad at all. I actually want that. I just can't afford to. When I am debating whether or not to buy a cheese plate..... well you know what I mean. I really want that.

@Max, dead on!! This is exactly what I'm looking for. A more elegant "Shoulder Dovetail" that takes advantage of the dovetail. Like this shoulder thing would slide on, you slide some sort of bridge onto the two 15mm lightweight rods attached to the front of the Assault plate and you're handheld in 30 seconds. I'm guessing that photo is one of those Red CGI picks that you wish you didn't see because it will be a while, then backordered, and THEN you get it. Red.... such a tease. But yea, thanks Max for responding!

@Curran, I see what you're saying, however, I just want to utitlize the given setup of the quickrelease and the Assault plate to just plop off handles, shoulder and we're up. The clutch is like wife material, right now I am looking for a hot babe (with issues) but will make me happy (maybe long time?).

Thanks for responding guys. Really appreciate your time and insight.

Andy, it's a actual photo from Jim in another thread, so it does already exist, and i think the shoulder mount is part of the clutch, and will be sold separately, so we're actually quite close to this one i think :)

Andy, if you can hang tight for a few weeks I'll have something for you - quick, comfortable, and affordable.

I seriously might look into this. Thanks guys. However, anyone actually buy this and liked it?

The one on the store doesn't seem to sit as well as the other one that Jamison pointed out.

Again thanks everyone for your insight.

I should have pics up by the end of the month and availability soon after. I have the same needs as you guys and can't wait to be out shooting with it.

I've been already studying a lot of shoulder pads/ rigs that are out there and it seems like at this point I'll have to put something together myself. I'm not a fan of giant rigs, mantis or clutch like devices. Yes they're super comfortable and all that but I think they're defeating the whole purpose of keeping the camera setup small and portable.
I'd like to use 15mm LWS and a shoulder pad that goes straight under the camera. Not behind it and also not underneath a bunch of accessories (QR, bottom plate etc) . I think I had figured it out but I'll wait until my X arrives to make sure. Good times.

I mean the idea of the clutch is nice, but for my purposes, it's too much and too costly.

If there was some way for someone to make something where I'd snap my mounting plate into and I'd have a lightweight shoulder pad and handles of some sort, I would be content.

I just want to be light, but have some degree of grip to my rig.

I don't know, maybe I have no idea what I'm talking about.
