One of the most interesting features of the scarlet at first glance is this half-ball at the rear end of the cam. Seems like a multifunctional jog-wheel with buttons or am I wrong?

Now there you go. Insane
If it's true then what you are seeing is the focus rings for the fixed lens at the back of the cam.

I can't find the post that revealed that snippet - but if it's true then it makes perfect sense for such a little cam.
An electronic ergonomic rearrangement ...
(say that 10 x quickly)

I was wondering about the half-ball design, speculating that possibly the sensor or closely-associated electronics is inside the ball and the buttons make use of what would otherwise be a non-functional lump.

A 2/3" sensor is still vastly larger than a typical "pocket" camera (consumer cams usually being 1/4" to 1/6") and the sensor-lens distance scales accordingly. So without the ball maybe the sensor would have to be outside the camera, or the whole housing would have to be bigger. Just my speculation.
