  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Hackintosh issue: garbled audio from Decklink

Hello,

First of all, yes, this is a Hackintosh, so I'm aware that they can have issues. I'm very likely jumping ship to Windows soon - though I can't at the moment - and this is just one more push in that direction for me.

I'm on an X99 Deluxe board with a 5960X processor running 10.12.3.

I have a Decklink 4K Mini Monitor PCI-E board, and I'm running audio out over SDI. When I ramp up the CPU, the audio skips/garbles. Audio over built-in Realtek or other USB audio interfaces is fine. I get the same issue when I tested a Decklink 4K Extreme 12G. This issue does not occur in Windows 10. Seems to be a PCI-E/bus issue.

Slot configuration is as recommended for Resolve:
Slot 1: GTX Titan (old version)
Slot 2: empty
Slot 3: Decklink
Slot 4: empty
Slot 5: TB card

I tried resetting all overlocking (auto across the board) & disabling the Thunderbolt card with exactly the same results. Is this perhaps something resulting from a lack of native X99 support in OSX? Any other thoughts?

This is a perfect example why anyone considering serious professional platform should stay away from Hackintosh.
In your case you can't even call BMD for help...
But, if I were you, I would fire up Windows on your computer and see, if you have the same problem on Windows. If you do, then its a hardware issue. If not... well you know then...

As I mentioned in the OP, 1) I'm well-aware that this is a Hackintosh and that it may not work, but I'm wondering if it should/could, but thank you for the obvious answer. 2) It does work in Windows.
 
Things you can do to figure out the problem.

1. Get another Decklink card and see if you have the same issue. Could be a heat issue with the Decklink or just a defect.
2. Try moving the card to a different slot.
3. Install Windows on another drive and see if you have the same issue.
4. Try different software and see if the issue happens with all software apps.

Btw, I've been running Hackintosh on a professional use system for a few years with zero issues. Actually I'm currently on my 3rd Hackintosh system, and none of them had any issues once they were set up. Call BMD anyway. Just don't tell them you're running a Hackintosh.

I would check which version of the Desktop Video driver you're running, and see if updating that (or even rolling it back) solves the problem.

If you know the audio within the computer system itself is fine, then I'd live with the other outputs you have. There are always limitations like this with Hackintoshes. (Thunderbolt presents some issues, too.)

Which specific software are you using for playback, BTW?
 
What speeds are your PCIe ruining at, sometimes they downgrade speed from say 8x to 4x depending on what order you place them in.
Have you tried looking on the tonymac86 and insanelymac forums, probably a better place to ask.
Setting up a proper SSDT OR DSDT can help with OS X in setting its ACPI table correctly.

Toleda is the man for audio patches, I may look into his stuff myself although I need to learn more, at the moment I'm using voodoohda patches which makes my motherboards internal ports work properly and a RME Fireface400 for audio needs, so it might be a driver issue which Blackmagic "maybe won't help with because it's a hack" might not be able to solve, I could be wrong though. I'm pretty amazed what my Hackintosh can do
 
There are known audio issues with BM on OSX. These were meant to be fixed in 10.12.x, but i'm still seeing issues. Which driver set are you using? v10.8.x? Try v10.5.4. That's been the most stable OSX driver for a looooong time.

Same issue occurs when I tested a Decklink 4K Extreme 12G - normal card I use is the Mini Monitor 4K.

This issue does not occur in Windows 10. Definitely seems to be a driver issue.

Issue occurs in every other PCI-E slot.

Verified that I'm using it in a 16x slot running at 16x speed.

I'm only able to roll back to the first 10.8 driver, as that's the first drive that supports the Mini Monitor. Issue still occurs.

Have asked on Tonymac/Insanely forums as well - no response there; figured some guys on here would be helpful as well, as you all have been!

I'm looking at purchasing one of the new Mackie Big Knob Studio audio control panels once they're released. That should let me have a nice audio interface and bypass the BM until the driver issue is resolved.

I'm not familiar with the board. I take it every other PCIE slot is 16X and 16X speed?

It's laid out as follows for a 40-lane CPU (which I have)
5 x PCIe 3.0/2.0 x16 (x16, x16/x16, x16/x16/x8, x8/x8/x16/x8, x8/x8/x8/x8/x8 mode)
1 x PCIe 2.0 x4 (max at x4 mode)
