Here is the latest in the Gymkhana series. Insane driving by Ken Block once again.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4TshFWSsrn8

It was shot on Red MX, HPX 170, Canon 5D MarkII, Canon 7D, and Go Pro. The POV was Canon and Go Pro. The main driving shots were about 80 percent Red MX and 20 percent HPX 170. It is pretty easy to see the difference even at the low res youtube version that is linked. There were two trips to the location. Since DC did not see any reason to list the crew on the credits here are the players.

Directed by- Joshua Martelli, Matt Martelli- Mad Media

Trip 1
Camera A- Mike McEntire
Camera B- Jay Schweitzer
Audio- Doug Edge
First AC- Sherri Miranda
First AC- Nathan Garafolos
POV- Ryan Holdridge
Photographer- Vincent Knakal
Production Assistants- Eddie Barreto, Brian Thompson, Patrick Guera
Behind the Scenes- Tobin Yelland, Ross Haines

Trip 2
Camera A- Mike McEntire
Camera B- Joshua Martelli (Director)
Audio- Doug Edge
POV- Ryan Holdridge
Photographer- Vincent Knakal
Production Assistant- Eddie Barreto
Behind the Scenes- Ross Haines

This was a beast to film due to on and off storms and a very short window to work with. Also most of the segment was filmed on Trip 2 with minimal support and minimal sleep.
Hope you enjoy,
Mike

Wow they credited the "stunt" Segway rider but not the camera ops/crew. Anyways, great job it's a sweet video those DC Gymkhanas are are always fun to watch.

I've been excited since the first one came out, I really have to say i couldn't wipe the smile off my face for close to 20 min after watching it yesterday. Since you wernt using a phantom on this shoot did you guys have any ideas of slowing footage down in post with say Twixtor? Im gonna be producing a show promo in Oct and Able doesn't have cert classes for phantom available till Dec it seems. So im wondering what kind of speed ramps you could get out of 120fps footage from a red one using twixtor and not even bothering with a phantom.

Hell yeah Mike. Intense as usual. Love the intro.

MANIAC!
(loved it!)

Well Gymkhana 2 had some phantom shots and this was meant to be more hardcore driving. I have used twixtor on some slo mo red stuff and it looks great. Long renders but fantastic results.
Best

Mike, I love your work on these gymkhana vids. I think its so cool that you're here on reduser too. I'm assuming you shot at 2k to get higher fps? The twixtor on slowmo shots definitely turned out well.

Thanks Justin. I did shoot a tiny bit of 2K on it but mostly 4K to show the aggression of Ken's driving. Also I use twixtor on my own projects but was not involved in the edit of GK3 so not sure if it was used.

Yeah Mike! That was a sick edit! The Gymkhana series kicks ass. You really did nail the aggression of kens driving. I like the in cab stuff also so we can really see what he's got going on in there throughout the course.

Some of those spaces he was in were crazy tight. Much carnage on the shoot?

Yeah there was a little carnage. It was caused by an early faulty tire selection that was remedied pretty quickly. Can't say too much more but there were a couple of heavy moments.

Amazing, MDP still allive and kickin'!! That is radical. Got all your dvd's here since chulksmack. Great inspiration too me and my friends. I guess Brad seperated from you? His stuff still makes me tick but great too see your still doing bussiness. All in all really cool intense new gymkhana. Must be a real challenge to come with something surprising after all the successes.

Are you happy with the gopro extra footage? Not to be a pain in the ass but....you can really see a huge leap in quality if you cut back and forth between red and gopro. I guess it breaks off while trying to grade it the same way? 7D looks way way better. I use gopro too but only in a production with 7d and hmc150. I probably wouldn't have used it alongside a RED but I'm glad you did. It was nice to see.

Lets see Stomping Grounds, Technical Difficulties, Simple Pleasures list goes on those vids are over 10 years old and still get my hyped to ride not to mention the cinematography and music selection was always the highlight of waiting for the premiers at the yearly SIA .
Good to see Mike and crew taking it to the next level with familiar faces from the skate/snow families.
Keep it up Mike.

J.K. thanks for the props. I was working for Mad Media on this shoot and they choose to use the go-pro cameras and the 7D at the same time because alot of the driving was only going to happen a few times. Not enough time to rerig between shots given our schedule. I agree that the go-pro does not cut as well as the 7D but it gets the point across and that is the whole deal. This piece was supposed to have a more core feel to it and I think it was achieved. It has an old school skate feel to me that is really refreshing.
Stoked on the final product for sure. Brad is in Georgia working for an ad agency now. It has been a good challenge to be working on all kinds of different stuff after being so focused on snowboarding for so long.
Best Mike

Thanks for your comment Mike. Great to hear your thoughts. Absolutly positive you achieved the feel you're talking about. I got the feeling that it is also good for snowboarding that you focus on different things. That's the way to progress but I have hope you'll be back with something that will blow the mind of many snowboarders.
Great to 'Follow you around' on reduser. <<btw FMA still my favorite mdp dvd...still got a copy wrapped in plastic here. Gosh if only that was filmed on RED lol.
