  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Guide a RED newcomer into spending al his money! :D

RED Cameras are a Huge financial commitments and if you area student finishing school doesn't make sense to invest on a Scarlet-W right now if you are not generating a lot of cash.

Maybe you find out RED is not your ideal camera (Sometimes you can see in the Marketplace section cameras with very few operational hours of people maybe disappointed with the system)

If I was you I would buy a second hand Scarlet-MX package (with little luck you may score one for $5,000) used the camera learn the system understand the benefits and limitation and around May next year when the Scarlet-W is available you should be able to sell you camera an lose a few hundreds instead of thousands in a system that is not OK for everybody. Maybe you find out with the project you are planing ti do, you need a low light monster like the A7sII which is a very capable camera.

You should check on vimeo a guy called "Kendy" and see what people is capable with a Canon 550d and a 30mm Sigma f1.4, so you will understand a nice camera won't make you a better shooter.

Not necessarily...SCARLET-W is SCARLET-W. It's not going to magically start spewing 10x more data in two years.
um, i was meaning if he is upgrading to a weapon of some sort, or whatever is announced at that time.
there is a 512 red minimag on ebay right now for $1600...

I suggest you do the following:

1) 2x 120gb cards instead of one 240gb
2) Loose the lightweight production pack, pickup the red side handle, and for the rest go with cheeper third party alternatives.
3) Loose the redbricks and go for third party v-mount batteries. I suggest 4x of the lightweight IBX batts. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1123373-REG/idx_73wh_li_ion_v_mount_batt.html
Or go with the PAG batts...
4) For now I would loose the sidewinder and wait for a suitable side handle to come out, pick that up instead of the sidewinder at that time.
5) perhaps spend saved cash on one of reds badass new EVF's

I'm on your way too, and in terms of rigging I'm planning to go wth wooden package (shoulder rig and Raven's advance accessory pack)
wish all lucks to us and hope that we will not have another twice grows race of US DOLLAR currency in my country))

Wow! What a great thread! Lots of great camera advice! Aren't these guys great? It is an amazing forum for film enthusiasts!

You did mention you don't have a computer that is adequate for editing 4K didn't you? So does this mean you haven't been able to down load the FREE Red Cine X yet and start playing with that yet? How will you solve your software issues? Where will you start? With mac or pc and how powerful will it need to be inside?

If you don't have the answers to these questions right now perhaps you should think about your next moves just a bit longer and keep researching? Happy New Year and good luck to you with your RED camera, which ever it ends up being!

For future proofness and if you want to sell it easier and if you don't want to run out of media easily on your shoot, I would go with the 512GB minimag

MAX DATA RATES (512GB & 1TB) WEAPON DRAGON (Carbon Fiber) up to 300 MB/s
MAX DATA RATES (120GB & 240GB) WEAPON DRAGON (Carbon Fiber) up to 225 MB/s

Good advice in this thread and above thank you!

I would get a WC cage when it comes out and avoid the Production Rig that you have in your cart, can save you lots of money
