We're just having fun to kill time until it's out so I will say end of November. The different camera programs are running concurrently as far as I understand the tea leaves. That means they are probably way further along than we think. I also think they recently pooled all their resources onto getting significant Epic X's out the door. I think we will see them before 2012. I am planning for Spring of 2012 money-wise but can't help checking the forum a few times a day.

Yeah, money wise I'm go to go as I have been saving up - assuming that there isn't a big price surprise. I can't tell you how much I want this camera to get access to the higher resolutions and frame rates (plus Raw, of course)

I'm hoping they will start to ship in January 2012.
There is likely to be quite a long waiting list though...

They want to have enough built and in stock to prevent that from happening. No List, Stages or backorders is what they said they want when the Scarlet is released.

You beat me to if Jeffrey. Yep.

This is not good news. If RED themselves are saying its not close, dare we even hope for a 2012 release? (hehe...no, but seriously, I'm left to wonder)

I just wish they'd come out and say something. We're all sitting here patiently waiting. But won't be much longer with this news.

Just curious, Jeffrey...do you have a "need a camera in my hands ready to shoot" date? If so, you might be able to get some info with that...

Sorry if it seems like a bad attitude, not the case. Still a big supporter, still waiting. And to some degree yes. I need a Camera no later than end of November, but will probably start shooting early October. A big part of the not knowing that is really inconvenient in my case, maybe no one elses is things in life are constantly happening. I'm getting to the point where I'm allotting how much I can spend on a house, car, and camera. I'm not really frustrated with RED at all. It's just disheartening to hear info from outside sources when RED won't say anything.

I have a camera at this point and have work. It's more of a I'd like to start production on one camera, end on the same. My work situation doesn't really allow me to buy and sell fast. Rental is very expensive for how weather dependent my shooting is as well, as is location convenience. I'm sure that seems to early at this point though. Who knows they could announce it soon, it could be another year. Part of me is feeling like, welp, how can I find a way to afford an Epic at this point...Or an MX. Do people usually Finance cameras that expensive?

To be fair we are not certain if this info from the employee at red UK is his personal opinion or based on a fact. Though it could be I wouldn't take this as a definite answer, could have just been a guy talking casually and speaking for himself not realizing the implications he was making being an employee of the company. Though then again he could have some inside info, I just don't think this is enough to go on. Now, am I saying hold off on shooting, no never, just don't take this as if Jim himself had said it, now if Jim were to say something similar then I would understand.

I've been saying it's like waiting for the creation of 16mm film, it's just unfortunate that we know it's coming but not when. So if you have to go buy or rent that camera to cover the gap don't hesitate, but when 16mm digital finally gets released you'll be back and so will I.... if I have the cash... oh please let me have the cash...

To our dreams, may they all come true!

I hear ya, but we won't hear anything per the new POLICY. Which is very disheartening. You can all understand me not wanting to go into production shooting the 7D ;) I really want to wait it out if at all possible but i'm starting to consider the FS100/F3. I just don't want to blow the money I'll lose on those to acquire a RED when they finally decide the Scarlet is ready. The only thing I really want to hear is... It is still in the plans, it will release before you have to worry about price increases.

The other thing to think about, if Philip Bloom is right...and we are looking at a longer wait until say 2012...say hello to price increases! While I'm sure they're well worth it, it makes you go back to the thread that said, if everyone pays attention they won't be hurt by it.

I'm not expecting to hear anything

The annoying thing about this sort of rumor is that it allegedly comes from someone directly at RED.... which makes it seem like less of a rumor (but as Stephen pointed out above, we have no way of knowing if the source is speaking from an informed perspective or not).
Nevermind the fact that we have no idea what the source's idea of a "fair way off" is.

Honestly, I would ignore it - and move on.
The truth is we have no idea - if I were you I would wait until the last possible moment that you can, and then commit to whatever camera system suits your needs best for the project you are doing.
It is better to shoot than not shoot - and I would never consider pushing a project back due to the possibility of a 'better' camera (not that you were).
Better cameras will always be around the corner - and I assume you would not be in this game is you only had one story to tell.

Shoot this one on whatever suits you the best at the time you need to shoot and shoot the next one on Scarlet... or the one after that... or the one after that... as soon as its available.

I know it's not the situation any of us wish it were - but it is the reality we're dealing with.
Best things we can do in the meanwhile is keep shooting.

as long as the Canadian dollar stays strong i don't care either way.... just kidding. I understand that but honestly they can't price the scarlet too much higher otherwise it will price itself out of the market. Now if epic-s or something like it is still planned (a 13k-15k camera) I would assume scarlet would still come in well under that so as to offer a variety of camera choices. If I remember scarlet was not on the price increase list, but that could be good or bad as they are still working on the final price, still I don't think the Christmas price hike will be that bad (for scarlet without a chance to get in before the hike) maybe the extra's will be but I wouldn't be surprised that there will be discounts on accessories bought with a scarlet after December if that is when they are released but I could be wrong on that.

these are all assumptions based on facts so who knows the thing is you can't build your life around assumptions and no professional should ever rely on them for their career. I know it sucks but we have to plan like they do not exist (which they don't to us) and will not exist, until they do. I know it's crazy it's hard and might be impossible for some (we all have our own issues). Just seems to me the only way to go about things at this point.

But as red has stated they still plan on the releasing the same or similar (I think better) products (scarlet, red ray, 4k projector, dragon and monstro sensors) and they have said as long as we trust in them we will not be let down (other than a long wait due to earlier issues with delays and timelines) we should be fine.

It's understandable some are now disenfranchised with this all but I think it's the worst time to loose faith, but blind faith is never a good thing and neither is sitting on your hands waiting for a project. So maybe now is the time to dig deep and get real creative with how to accomplish that next project, beg borrow steal (don't steal) make a deal with someone in your area who owns a camera but has no projects reach out to friends colleagues... I don't know.

mah I know it sucks but there is not much you can do, so might as well get out there and start working on something... if you can.

Could you hire an F3 or something similar for the project you need the scarlet for Jeffrey?
I'm looking into longer term rentals and leasing options but they far exceed my current expenses. We'll see. I might go back to the building blocks and look for some sponsors.

What is your present camera?

I would suggest that one project ... unless it will generate enough capital or exposure may not be worth getting too far off track...camera wise. Perhaps
using a compromise...non rental at low price until the Scarlet is released...keeping in mind you will probably not be the first in line for delivery. If you have
saved a fair amount of the price perhaps opening a RED account and putting it there while using a fraction to keep shooting and await the announcement.

Perhaps a GH2 with a couple of VC primes and the 14-140 will suffice until you can move to the Scarlet...many of us prefer the files from the GH2 over most
of the Canons...and it is a much cheaper entry...however if your present camera is up to the task you may not need this step.

I do feel that RED has a sizeable commitment in fulfilling the EPIC backlog and that the Scarlet may have a bit longer horizon to delivery....expect it to be
wonderful when it arrives....keep shooting until it does.

Bob

What are you shooting, specifically, Jeffrey? I used a bunch of different cameras in the last year shooting in the backcountry/mountains etc. The GH2 is pretty good for sharpness. It's got it's issues, but cheap cheap, and you could sell it when the Scarlet does appear. I'm hoping the Scarlet does come for this winter season. November or December would be perfect.
