Okay. Any clever fellas out there made one of those outdoors smokers out of a two-stroke yard blower?? There is apparently a smart trick of winding brake pipe inside the muffler and connecting up an extra pulse pump in the crankscase to move the smoke oil through the muffler heat exchanger then into the blower airflow as smoke. Any advice appreciated, plans or photos appreciated even more.

I would not suggest trying to experiment and build one yourself, because of possible safety issues. Call up a big rental house and see if you can get one of the larger Smokemakers, like a Smoke Giant:

I've seen these used on areas the size of football fields, so they'll definitely handle a large area.

Another reason to not do the 2-cycle engine hack-job thing: No one wants to breathe that shit.

I know two places in norther California that have super dense fog that is "whispy" that you can totally count on. One is Pacifica (it's like 90% foggy in the mourning, it's like insane). Another is the delta (the delta "tooley" fog is even predictable by the weather guys). Lot of cool locations in these places, to me, if your gorilla shooting getting super dense natural fog is easy to do if you know your locations(you have to shoot though based on the weather, but if you have few people). Since your in LA, could always drive up for a quick shoot(there's also some spots in coves above santa barbara that have real good early mourning fog).

Jeff.

The smoke is apparently separate from the exhaust which is only used to heat the smoke fluid to vapor which is directed into the fan inlet. However, two-stroke exahust tends to linger and stink the place out and would probably drift and catch up with the smoke in still air.

Patrick.

I regret to advise that I am not the Robert Hart of LA but one of the five that I know of in Western Australia.

Not to highjack a thread, but are there any smaller smoke machines (read: inexpensive units) that are readily available for purchase? Just need to be able to fill up a medium sized room (not a stage or outdoor area), but it'd be for 3 weeks and the rental fee is substantial enough for me to want to look at purchasable options.

Robert, Ask around if any of you friends have a cheap fog machine used for parties at Halloween. They normally don't work too long. Get one of these broken machines and take it apart.
See how it works, gets some ideas and steal any useful parts. Basically, you need to pump fog fluid somehow into a hot chamber that has a small hole at one end to let the evaporated fluid escape. In your original idea, just stop off the coil with metal cap that has a tiny hole in it.

Ryan. Thanks for your suggestion. I do have a small electric smoker but being of the mindset that if not broke don't fix, I have not opened it up for a forensic exam. It would be my fate to break some small obscure non-replaceable part or have a spring or something fly out and disappear.
