Hi,

Is using HDMI out of my GTX 570 card and an HP Dreamcolor LP2480zx that has been calibrated to Rec.709 a relatively safe bet to color grade projects for HDTV and Blu-ray?

Looking for low budget solutions for low budget projects and there seem to be a lot of arguments for and against Dreamcolor monitors online...

What else could be suggested in the $2,000 range for a monitor or I/O box (MXO2, AJA, BM)?

Cheers,

Kevin

I know that there is some debate around the Dreamcolors, but personally I've had good results with mine. You need to have the calibration set with it.

The alternative in your pricerange would be to use a Panasonic VT30 plasma screen, providing you have the means to calibrate it. There's an autocalibration system with Calman software. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-mwphqjqcsg

The main issue with the Dreamcolor is the viewing range -- you have to be directly in front of it, plus it's not a very big monitor. It's a problem if more than 2 people need to see the image at the same time. And if the client/director/DP moves a foot to the left, the picture will change.

A plasma is better in that way, but it depends on which plasma and how it's set up. I can tell you that the 50" TH-50PF20 and 30 Panasonics are widely used for network TV and home video color correction all over LA.
