  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Hi

We got a chance to look at the Pascal v Maxwell cards.
Interesting results as on encoding it wasn't a huge difference on our test bench (6700k)

If your running a Maxwell with 6 cores or less no point in upgrading for encoding purposes.

Candlelight benchmark shows improvement of course.

Theres a lot more testing done so as always feel free to watch the video.

AFAIK the few vendors that have stock on the Pascal TitanX cards are still in gouge mode - $1,200, last I checked. It should get under $1,000 fairly soon, maybe Black Friday? If you're spending company money I'd just find one in stock and run the PO. I'm thinking about going high spec GTX1080 for $600-700. Good performer per watt and per dollar. Just waiting for better drivers, optimized utilization of graphics resources throughout the pipeline (have things gotten better yet?) and watching the market ;-)

From what I'm seeing and gathering, the 1080 is the real winner in this whole batch.

If you can find a Founders edition for $550-600, just add a hybrid cooler, tweak the OC (which has even more headroom than the Maxwell Titan) and you're set. The Pascal Titan just isn't returning numbers that warrant a $1200 price tag. Premiere and other Single GPU apps aren't benefitting, while dual GPU apps like Resolve don't scale enough to see major benefits on the Titan-X (P).

Considering the Titan-P is still only being distributed direct from NVidia (or in system builders) and we'll likely see a 1080Ti in a few months, I think you hold onto the last gen Titan-X or buy 1080's in the fashion I mentioned above. Spend the money on the CPU. Those cost savings will get you a 6950X upgrade which handles dual GPU's better anyway.

Exactly Jason, a high spec 1080Ti. I wonder if the right 3rd party could mod a 1080Ti to support 8GB or even 12GB VRAM without the TDP getting out of hand?

Of course, the chance of seeing a top flight driver for any Pascal card for OS X is virtually nil. My old MP towers get no love :-(

Blair, the 1080 already has 8GB and from what I've seen, it isn't as much of a bottleneck as we may have originally thought. Speaking of TDP, that 180W vs 250W Titan is what really leaves the door open to OC. A 1080 can commonly take a reliable 15-20% bump and still never see throttling when cooled. I found my Maxwell watercoolers for $50/each and honestly I think they even mate up with Pascal cards if you're ok with ditching the shroud. Don't quote me though.

My Titan's have been through 12-24 hour rendering sessions and never see temps in the 50's. So I'm left to wonder why I'd want to shell out an extra $1000-1200 for the new flagship. Doing the math, that's the price difference of a 6950 vs 6900K AND 128GB vs 64GB RAM.

edit: here's a good breakdown of what I'm finding as well...

I'm running the following machines with DVR;

M4000 ui and 2x 1080 = 4fps rendering with Noise Reduction on a UHD size VR scene

M4000 ui and 2x Titan X Pascal = 6.5fps rendering with Noise Reduction on a UHD size VR scene

Will be testing 3 titans this week and hoping to get my hands on a few P6000's as well.

Will update when i can.

Simon - What are specs on your Xeon station? I haven't seen many benchmarks on how well the Pascals scale with additional cores, assuming the software supports it.

If I was confident that the system configuration could leverage every last CUDA core I gave it I might be more inclined to throw down for the Pascal TitanX instead of the Pascal 1080Ti - particularly for a brand new build. That said, like Jason, I think I could get more mileage by re-allocating the delta to CPU grunt - and maybe some more RAM.
