  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

GTX Titan and Mercury Playback Engine

Hi all,

I was planning to make a new small workstation to run adobe and bmd sw.. and being able to move it around in a smaller box.. as this fits more to my conditions.
a small box with mini ATX form factor to take Asus Rampage IV Gene as the main board and an i7 3930K with sealed water cooling to fit the space,
the pci-e options are only 4 (16x 4x 16x 8x) with no sharing lanes the 4x is physical the others are all 16x physical.. so my plan was to use the first two slots for the Titan and the two rest for rocket and bmd card.. then I found this topic and started reading on the supported cards list in the PPro cc blog page, then I realized support for new ATI cards.. hmmm.. the FirePro W7000 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814195118 .. these are single slot cards, so I can fit two of these and use the 4x slot for BMD as it will be free from the Titan's dual slot bulkiness.. some googling showed me that it beat up nVidia's K4000.. with big deal.. but when coming to the apps you use you would ask people who had the chance to try, how would a FirePro perform in adobe and bmd apps? of course comparing to original Titan plan, I know that nvidia always get the fresh support then ati comes next as in experience with adobe and bmd.. they say cuda is faster than opencl.. is that really true when you are going to pay 1.5x the price of a Titan?
what do you think?

PS: I'm not trying to make an ati vs nvidia fight, I never used ATI before I'm nvidia religious man since they bought 3dfx.. but honestly, FirePro took my heart, didn't know how far they went.. :-)

I do not own a Titan but I believe it is a Single slot card as you can run a 4-way SLI on an ATX Motherboard. The GTX 690 is dual slot GPU.

Titan/GTX780 cards have dual slot coolers, but single GPUs. The GTX 690 is a dual slot, dual GPU card.

gtx 690 has a dual GPUs, but they are on the same pcie x16 slot, two cards would benefit from extra bandwidth.. a GTX790 would be cool if existed but would still suffer from the same thing.. bandwidth..

GTX690 doesn't suffer from bandwidth restrictions on PCIe v3, as it is designed for. Even with both GPUs churning away, it can't come close to saturating a v3 X16 connection. Full bandwidth of a PCIe v3 X16 slot is 15.7GB/s.

If a GTX790 existed, it couldn't come close either...

and it looks like apple stole my idea of the small portable machine with two FirePro cards.. :sifone:
but, in fact by doing this, they taught me a lesson not to do it.. as one always has to go against what apple designs.. its my life experience..

I'm sorry, it seems that portability is different from one man to another.. :-D
this is a really big case.. IMO

Haha yeah that case is huge! It has 20% more volume than a Mac Pro, which is already pretty huge and not especially portable... I'd even suggest it might be hard to find a larger chassis than that :P

In that case you'd go supermicro.. They got some nice big chassis that support two xeons and huge amount of memory..

Ha, its actually a mid size case, with a Rampage Extreme!
This is actually my first using it!
I think it is portable enough because of the handles and CG!
