  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I am in the process of upgrading the GPU on my system and was thinking of getting a GTX 980 with its HDMI 2.0 support for 4k 60hz TVs. But for the same price or lower I could get a used 780 ti or titan which have more Cuda cores. I know the GTX 980 is just as fast or faster in games but what about Premiere CC? Does anyone have actual benchmarks comparing these cards in exporting out of premiere pro and real time playback?

Titan is better for CUDA / computational work, especially the Titan Black edition. OTOH, new Titans should arrive in the next couple months. New 20nm GPU series probably early in the third quarter... Maybe it's better to go for a bargain now and then look to a powerhouse GPU later when the whole HDMI 2.0 and DisplayPort v1.3 situation is better resolved. How does the rest of your system stack up?

Thanks Jeff. The rest of my system was just recently upgraded. I am running 2x Xeon 2687w v2 in an Asus z9pe motherboard. Also got a 4x 3tb raid 5 running off the motherboard (could use a dedicated raid card). My current GPU is actually a r9 290 (it's a long story like it used to be used as a gaming card) and Iam very surprised at the performance of the relatively new open cl supported cards. I can get full red playback of 6k dragon footage no problem. Only problem is its a little noisey and doesn't have HDMI 2.0 I was thinking I might try to pickup an Lg49ub8500 on Boxing Day to run as a preview monitor as it apparently runs HDMI 2.0 at 60hz very well. But yeah might wait on both; for the new Titan to come out and for cheaper 4k TVs after ces.

The 980GTX gives about the same performance as the 780ti in Adobe CC. I would suggest that for now and look at the coming monster 900 Series Titans when they release.

Just swapped out a GTX 285 for an EVGA GTX 980. With the rebate from EVGA it was just a hair over $500.00. Definitely runs a lot cooler (46 vs 74) and can be easily over clocked. BIG difference in RCX. 5K 1/2 plays silky smooth. Pretty much the same in Resolve, but I haven't piled on a lot of nodes yet. I thought about a 780ti. Slightly cheaper (if you can find them ... getting scarce) but from what I have read, they run a lot hotter. I was having heat problems in my box with the 285. It was throwing off so much heat it was causing my ATTO R680 into thermal shutdown! Extra case fans and a slot fan helped, but this new card really did the trick, plus it has all the extra horsepower, can be over clocked up the cazoo, and has HDMI 2.0 (for whatever that is worth).

A good article and look at the GPU acceleration of Resolve and where its at Cuda versus Open CL. The author though doesn't realize the impact the rest of the system has on GPU acceleration and why the Titan card didn't show much difference from the 980GTX. This actually illustrates how important the CPU and ram is to the performance of the GPU acceleration. If the CPU cannot decode the data fast enough and the ram cant get the data to the GPU fast enough then the load on the GPU at any point in time will be far lower than what the GPU can handle. This is one of the major reasons DDR4 has such a large impact on GPU acceleration and removed the bottle neck DDR3 was having for the amount of data media applications are moving at 2K+ resolution. In other words dont bother with the highest end GPU if you dont have the system to fully utilize it.
