I'm in the process of upgrading my 2009 Mac pro. Right now I have the GTX 285 and it just squeaks by in Resolve grading 2k proves files.

I'm not savvy about post hardware and get a bit confused when people talk about it, especially when it comes to using
a GTX 680 vs. GTX 770/780 etc.

Ideally I would like to color 4k real time, but I know I need more than just a graphics card to do that.

For now I just want to boost the speed so which card would be best?

Macvidcards has some GTX 770 cards you can run inside your tower. Much faster than the GTX 680. Stay away from the GTX 780 or faster cards unless you get extra power supply or you will kill your system.

Not sure if the GTX770 can do real time 4k on your system.

You can also hack your bios to the 2010 Mac Pro and upgrade your CPUs and RAM. i did that on a couple of my 2009 Mac Pros and am very happy with the results. My upgraded 2009 with a GTX770 is out on a job, so I can't test if it can do realtime 4k or not.

Macvidcards also modify the GTX780 3 or 6GB to work with Mac Pro 2009/2010/2012 and it works fine. it stays within the power requirements of the tower with their settings/firmware. no issues to report just a freaking fast card that can chew through 4k

Their site says they are sold out of these. :-( How much faster is this than the 680?

EDIT: Correction - sold out of 6GB; still have 3 GB.

Be very careful. The only GTX780 I see from Macvidcards right now is external power only!!!!! It will kill your entire system!!!!

Here is an rough idea of speed differences:

GTX480 GT/s 34
GTX680 GT/s 128
GTX770 GT/s 134
GTX780 GT/s 210

Thanks for the info, everyone. The 780 looks promising; what is the difference between the 3GB and the 6GB versions?

I have a 680 and a 780 3GB from MacVid in two separate towers. Both run internal power and the 780 3GB is awesome. Recommended to get through MacVidCards if you have an older Mac Pro.

That and a dual 6-core 3.46Ghz Mac Pro and your running faster than the newest high spec trash can in my opinion.

I was reading on some random forums that people had success running the GTX980 in old macpro's with new nevida firmware. You guys think that card would fry the 2009 mac without additional power supply?

Edit: Looked into it and looks like the GTX980 draws quite a bit less power then the 780, going try it out and see how it goes, will report back.

The 970 and 980GTX cards are far lower power draw than previous generation. Those are ideal for Mac Pro power req's if they are working at this point.

I tested the 980 out in my 2009 Mac Pro today. In order to get the comp even boot I had to install the newest nevida web driver. Good news is that the card shows up and appears to be working. Bad news is that premiere does not seem to recognize it as being cuda capable. I learned that the 2014 premiere has a auto graphics card finder so its my hope that it will work with the next cuda update.

Found this thread to be helpful: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1782921

Even without cuda functioning properly it the gtx 980 seemed to be as fast or faster then cuda working on my old quarto 4000.

Will update this thread if I find out anymore info.
