Hi.

I have a strange/stupid question ( I think )
Last week I was disappointed, because there was no Scarlet 2/3 for around the 6-7K.

Now, I like to buy a Scarlet, with the budget I have. 10K
Question is, what is a good starting kit to begin with. I have a SmallHD, several IDX V-mount batteries, Atomos Samurai and a Zacuto rigg, and last but not least, a Red zoom lens 17-50

Thanks in advance.

Regards, Johan

You should probably go with the Scarlet brain w/ PL Mount. Since you've got a monitor, you'll also need either the side handle or redmote to control the camera. The 17-50 should work beautifully on the Scarlet. I am thinking of getting it myself. Not sure about where to get the V-mount battery option, I'm sure someone else will know :)

Unfortunately you absolutely cannot buy a Scarlet kit for 10k, even barebones. To be precise, you'll have to spend $11,800 + shipping + tax (only if you're located in CA). That price includes two items, the Scarlet Ti PL camera/ssd module kit for $11,250 and a REDMOTE for $550. This is the cheapest option for you, but there are a good amount of downsides to this kit and the two biggest follow.

1. You probably wouldn't be able to use your camera until the end of December/early January because the REDMOTES are backordered and that is the soonest you could get one because of the waiting in line system RED uses on orders.

2. You wouldn't have the ability to shoot 5k, 4k, or 3k. Because you're not purchasing any SSDs, you would record out your SDI into the ATOMOS Samurai at 1080p. Also, at the moment the SDI out has a slight "bordering" so you would have to crop every shot you take in post to like 105% or something.

If you're going with this kit I would highly recommend you make your purchase by the end of the year, because once RED starts selling brain only Scarlets for $9,700 you'll have to also buy a PL mount (+$2,000) and an SSD module whenever you decide to move to RED SSDs (+$1,500). By purchasing before the price switch you are essentially getting the SSD module for free.

As for power, I'm not very familiar with IDX's solutions for EPIC/Scarlet powering, could somebody else shine some light?

While there are downsides to this kit I wouldn't advise you against it. It gives you a great place to start and be able to add pieces onto your kit as the money comes in. Even with the SDI recording you still get the 13 stops of latitude and REDs very flat gradable image. However, I would advise you to begin purchasing RED SSD media as soon as possible so that you can begin taking advantage of all the incredible features that RED has to offer.

Hope that helps!

Also, I know it would be painful, but you could more than make up the difference by selling your RED 17-50mm and buying a Canon 24-70mm to replace it. This would allow you to buy the Scarlet Al Canon mount ($9,750) instead of the PL and with the REDMOTE only have a package price of $10,300. Plus, after buying the Canon 24-70mm and paying the $300 difference over $10k you would have about $3,000 left from the sale price of your 17-50mm. If you applied it all to your Scarlet your setup would only end up costing you about $7,000.

It actually does appear that everything in the kit is what you need to get started to shoot in 4K Raw, which is really the main point after all - power, side grip to hold the battery, SSD media and reader, and touch screen to control the camera settings. it looks like you can control the camera w the side module, and you could tap out of SDI or hdmi to a recorder. Heck, you could just power the camera with the ac adapter. But if you want to go outside you will need the kit.

Well, the SSDs will bust your bank (mine too) so I would stick with the Atmos for now -
as far as V-mounts, I have found IDX seems to have the best _Plate_ variety and prices - get the version with the 4-pin XLR cable and then buy the RED XLR-Lemo DC adapter cable (unless manufacturers start equipping their plates with a RED option!?). I would do some research on V-batteries - prices vary substantially!

As others advise, I would ditch the PL-mount lens and fund a nice set of Canon-mount (Tokina, Sigma are nice) glass - don't forget some great deals on ebay!

My budget quickly went from "Wow!!! the camera only costs $9,750!!! to... Ok so clearly I can't buy it for this... A reasonable package is $17,000... Now I'm spending around $27,000..."

I wish you luck my friend! I would say at "barebones" you could get a "rigged" package for their package price of $14,015.

Hi Guys.

Thanks a lot for the various answers, now I can make a good decision.
I think I'll go for the canon mount kit, and sell my Red lens.

Thanks again.

regards, Johan

I'm considering the 17-50 Red Zoom lens. Can you PM me, some more info on the lens? How old, price? Thanks.

Hoi Johan,

Nice to see you on this forum.
No reason for dissapointment. This 4K format will be futureproof so it saves money over time.
2 years ago I opted for the S35. Today the name changed: it will definitly be Scarlet-X. Thinking about similar options but as for me a set of Nikkors is on the shelf.
Patrick opened a nice thread 'Stills versus Cine glass' , very informing.

Wim
