  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Group purchase of Arri Matteboxes

This deal is almost done

Ok this is my recap on the ARRI group buy for Matteboxes.

About 75% of you should have your stuff by now, and the last 25% will be shipping this week. Cool.

There are still a couple of you where orders are being worked on. You got moving before deadline, so ARRI is holding the deal until you get your respective issues taken care of. Steve is on it at Abel.

I'm happy. We did well, sold a buttload of Matteboxes, a lot of Follow Focus units and the Filter deal went well also.

FYI that filter deal is STILL going on... And it's sweet. If you have not taken advantage of it, you should.

The only thing that messed us up a little was Jim's post of the RED Mattebox right towards the end of the deal. That render really messed up a couple of people's minds in regards to "Should I wait for this?!". Now of course, our deal is done, there is no release date on the RED Mattebox, and those people that held off are going "oops... where do I get a Mattebox?!"

Oh well.. Stuff happens. It did not effect our deal, just those people who missed the boat.

The relationship with ARRI is a good one, and they are a happy bunch of campers.. There may be other opportunities in the future.. I'll keep you all informed.

Abel was very happy to help facillitate this group purchase. In the future, if there is any product for which people may be interested in arranging a group purchase, feel free to let us know. We have relationships with many manufacturers around the globe. Generally these companies are contractually bound todistribute only through certain channels, which is how we got involved with the Arri deal in the first place. And you may have a desire for a certain type of gear but not know of a resource that we do. Whether it is for a single item or 1000, Abel Cine Tech wants to be your Solutions Center.

These statements very much read Jim fouled your deal a bit because Arri MB are now in competition to Red matte boxes.

Remember you posted your closure statement as 10th Dec.

Jim was very much a gentlemen here as he waited 2 days (12th dec) after you posted the closure notice to announce the new Red mattebox.

Thanks for getting this thing rolling. I jumped on the filter deal and ordered Arri 19mm adapters from my MB and FF, as well as some other misc MB20 parts. The Arri gear arrived last week, still waiting on the filters, but I'm in no rush.

Wish there had been a deal like this 18 months back when I ordered my MB20 and FF! Not complaints though, it's all solid built hardware that I'll keep working for the next 10-15 years.

I hate to be picky, but the reason Abel got involved with the ARRI deal was because I selected them. It was not an easy selection either, a lot of reasearch between you and filmtools in CA was nessesary. There was a third vendor in the running, but that person had a nutty.

At the time Abel won the deal due to size, price, and the ability to ship from both LA and NY.

Nevertheless filmtools handled themselves very well and I have a lot of respect for that company. Abel was just a better fit, that's all.

There are more things coming down the pipe that I may be handleing, but first I need to make sure everyone gets what they ordered on this group buy. Looks like that will indeed happen.

Jay and all -

Just a quick note that the first part of my order arrived today and looks great. Jay, thanks for facilitating this. I ordered a bunch of extra filtration and decided I needed some new sticks and a head and Steve carried through great pricing on all of it. I double checked his pricing against several other vendors - even some that give us a whosale break, and he beat them across the board.

I'll keep you posted as the rest of the gear comes in.

What on earth happend to the 2nd ARRI deal I was about to get in with David.
Could someone provide a good reason for it's"vanishment"?

Is it really the end of MB-20 group purchase?

How many people does it take to arrange a group buy? Do you think Abel or filmtools can arrange something in the future with Arri?

There's going to be a lot of cameras shipping soon... But I don't need to tell you that :-)

Hey Jay,

Be picky all you want! I was trying to point out that a contracted vendor had to be involved instead of a direct purchase from Arri. That you chose Abel in the end was a boon for us, but not your only option. I have nothing bad to say about Filmtools and in fact they handle certain products that we don't so for our rental department I've actually purchased from them. Didn't want to make any false impressions.

I will not comment on the "other" deal that was happening other than to say it is not going to happen.

Another deal with Arri could be possible in the future, but the shifting value of the dollar I can tell you that the prices will not be the same. Right now there are no plans for this particular deal again.

Up to now we have had certain REDUsers run the group buys. The idea behind this was to keep someone in charge that represented "Our" interest. I am not saying this about Abel, but a company handleing a group buy, does not really benefit from getting us the best price if it cuts into their profit margin.

No other company would have gone through what I (And David Farland) went through in getting the best possible deal from ARRI.
