  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Group purchase of Arri Matteboxes

Jay

I'm in on the order of the MB20II and the FF4. I will call Steve Cohen tomorrow to place order. How many more do you need?

normally the Arri 5.65 X 5.65 trays hold 4 X 5.65 filters dont know why they would have changed that

Sorry I've been away. I was reading the thread and thought I've gone crazy but thanks digitalfx for steering me back on my path. I don't think they've changed this. I think this is a misunderstanding.

The 5.65"x5.65" combo tray WILL hold the Panavision size filter.... VERTICALLY. And then you would turn the filter filter unit 45 degrees and make it horzontal.

This is an important little tidbit that others were leaving out. It doesn't "just work". It works with a "work-around".

Now I am sure there are people out there that are doing this a lot, and we can check with them for how reliable this is, but if you think about it, the stress-support for the glass is being put in one direction, and gravity is pushing in antother. In short: ARRI did not design the 5.65"x5.65" tray to hold a 4"x5.65" filter horzontally, and the filter is not as stable as it would be in a tray designed for that size.

You will each make your own decision in regard to this issue. If you plan to get a three stage mattebox, then this is a non issue for you anyway.

Yes. But it's a 90 degree rotation. ;)

Anyway, each person will have to decide what is right for them. But I would think most will want the 4x5.65 ability.

Anyway, here's my questions for the Abel Cine guys and/or Jay...

By when do we ultimately need to commit to this deal? My conscience is not allowing me to commit to anything until the LART testing is over (LART being this weekend).

How many mattebox pre-orders are there now or how many more are still needed for the deal to remain alive?

I'm mostly interested in the FF-4 and possibly the filter package. But I may change my thinking on the mattebox this weekend after seeing it in action on RED.

The numbers are increasing, slowly but surely. Feel free to make up your mind next week.

Hi,
The Blender is an attenuated graduated filter.
The other filter is the HD Clear Soft effects. It is a softening filter that is used by John Newby on Las Vegas, on CSI Miami and House. It works for 35mm and HD. It even tested well on the Dalsa Origin.
You are correct the 1.8 ND is a resin filter without being sandwiched between glass. I am at Abel as I send this message and will speak with Steve about it.
Regards,
Wayne

Wayne,

How dark can we go and still stay with glass filters? Does formatt have any interest in putting some darker glass together for us? There was talk they might do this.

Guys, we are about half way there with 10 of you making an order so far.. This is a good thing..

Let's keep this rolling! Contact Steve and let him know what you are after.

We're doing well!

PS: Hey Jim... If you are monitoring this, you don't need any Matteboxes do you!?
:)
