Group purchase of Arri Matteboxes

Vendor Selected.... More Info..

Vendor Selected.... More Info..

Ok kiddies...

We have a Vendor. We're going with Abel Cine. The reasons are a couple:

1: Good prices (Are they the rock-bottom-can't-get-lower-if-you-threatened-the-salesguy's-family?! No.. But we're so low at this point, the vendors are only trying to beat each other by $5 or $10 dollars. What DOES make a difference is the next part:
2: Locations for shipping from either CA or NY. Abel is located on both coasts, and this can result is MUCH lower shipping costs to many of you. This matters a lot
3: Very knowlegable, easy to work with, wants to make this work and go the extra mile. To prove this I will share a "little something" with you in the next post.

Ok so the guy's name and info is:

Steve Cohen
Purchasing Manager
Abel Cine Tech
212-462-0131 Direct
212-462-0159 Fax
steve@abelcine.com E-mail

And more good news: He PROMISES that starting tomorrow he will be ONLINE HERE to answer any questions you may all have. This is major since a lot of you have questions galore, and, as has been posted earlier, I am not THE expert on this equipemnt.. So you will now have access to someone who knows more than I.

So there you go. Wanna place an order? This is the guy to call.

A cool little piece of info in the next post.

Jay

I'm teetering on being in on this deal. Any idea on how long it will be till these things are delivered? they aren't exactly sitting on the shelves. Also will prices be locked? as in firm, as in if the dollar sinks any more it won't change.

Little something extra...

Little something extra...

I figured since a bunch of us are already doing the mattebox deal, it made sense to look into filters. I came up with the package and Steve ran with it. He went to bat with us at Formatt.. Did really well too.

Mattebox Filter Package For RED:

Formatt 4x5.65 HD ND.3 - $154
Formatt 4x5.65 HD ND.6 - $154
Formatt 4x5.65 HD ND.9 - $154
Formatt 4x5.65 HD ND1.8 (Or 1.2, take your pick) - $160
Formatt 5.65x5.65 Soft Edge HD ND.6 Grad - $264
Formatt 138mm HD Circular Polarizor - $239.00

Total Price:$1,125.00
Also:
Formatt 4x5.65 clear HD/DV Soft Effects #3
Formatt 5.65x5.65 Blender HD ND.9 Grad
Included with Package FREE

Hope you like...I am SURE you have questions.. Just address them to Steve since he will have all the answers. This package is based on what I wanted to get for my Mattebox. I will tell you know I know VERY little about the two free filters. If anyone does know, talk about it!

This deal has NOTHING to do with ARRI. I am not trying to bang on the other group buy for filters.. Just trying to do a good job here.

Jay

so what are the final numbers from the Abel Cine guys for both the matte box and the follow focus?

See?! That's a PERFECT question for Steve! Hopefully we can get an answer from him tomorrow.

But I'm guessing he will say "Depends on what you order". Feel free to send him an E-mail stating what you want and I have no doubt he'll get you numbers.

I can tell you the follow focus basic is $2,825.10 and the 15mm or 19mm adaptor is free.

the mattebox basic is $3,435.00

As for the other parts, you need to decide what you want

Is it possible to get in on the filter deal without getting an MB 20II or FF4?

Also, when did Formatt start making a 1.8 HD ND?

When I ordered filters from them a couple months ago, 1.5 was the greatest density HD glass filter they could do. I had to special order it and they said it was the first one they had ever made. I guess they got the message....

Curran,

From what I know.. The Filter Deal will extend to everyone provided we hit the 20 mattebox minimum for the group buy. Then you can do the filter deal without having to purchase the mattebox. Right now, it all holds on the mattebox getting 20 buys.

As for the 1.8.. I need to check to make sure I am right

Jay

Just spoke to Steve and he did confirm the 1.8. We're half way there.... Also mentioned that you will receive the equipment 3rd week of December. ARRI does not stock and needs to build for this purchase.

Hello All,
I have been asked by Steve Cohen of Abel Cine Tech to make myself available to you to answer questions about Formatt Filters. Please send me any questions either within Reduser or to my e-mail address at wayne.schulman@bogenimaging.com.

Wayne,

Can you explain these two filters and their uses in our package.. They are being included free but I am not sure of exactly what they are.

Formatt 4x5.65 clear HD/DV Soft Effects #3
Formatt 5.65x5.65 Blender HD ND.9 Grad

Thanks
Jay

Also, when did formatt decide to do glass 1.8 filters.. This is new

Size matters

Size matters

Hi all, this is my first posting...ever.....I'm working with Jay A to finalize the list of items for the matte box and I want to include the appropriate size filter trays. I got a list of the desired filters and most are 4x5.65 and one is 5.65 x5.65 but Arri makes three different combo (dual sized) filter trays......they are all the same list price ($293) but the 338218 tray is 4x5.65 and 5x5, the 338219 tray is 4x5.65 and 4x4, and the 338220 tray is 5.65x5.65 and 5x6. This means we have to go with either two different trays or change filter sizes.....we could go with all 5.65 x 5.65 filters or we could change the one grad ND from 5.65x5.65 to 5x5....what do you think we should go with? Two different filter trays is an easy solution but doesn't allow for doubling up on P-sized filters. This, of course, is less of a problem for those going with a three stage matte box. Ultimately, everyone can get exactly the set-up they want, 2 or 3 stage with their choice of filter size...I'm just trying to finish the initial list which everyone can then use as a starting point to build their system.

Seriously

Seriously

I like the idea of having one size filter tray to start with, but the larger the filter is for the Grad ND. Does 5.65"x5.65 really make a huge difference over 5"x5"?

I am guessing not.. And if the filter is a little cheaper.. So much the better

Jay

Well Jay, it renders your 4*5.65 filters useless in the second tray. So you have to buy new filters. Isn't it smarter to have 5.65*5.65 so you can have 4*5.65 filters in it? The 5*5 will not fit the 4*5.65.

fred

But if I understand correctly, the tray that handles the 5.65x5.65 will not handle the 4x5.65. So this means if you want to use two NDs in your mattebox, you will have to have a third tray.

Am I right?

Ok I'm in. Most likely for both the ff-4 and the mb20II

It looks like I am not the only one who is completely confused on the size issue, when it comes to the trays. Can someone write a short guide on this.

I mean, I don´t have any filters lying around that I need to take into account, so I will start from scratch - I want a MB system that is as versatile as can be, to be used with the RED lenses (18-50mm, 50-150mm, 300mm for now). Personally I will mostly use NDs and Polas, other filtering will be done in post production.
