  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

GROUP BUY - Tilta Nucleus-M Wireless Follow Focus

So I spent a couple of hours with my newly arrived Nucleus-M. I have to say, if this holds up dependability-wise, it is an amazing bargain. Using this with Cine lenses will be great. With still lenses it will be a bit more of a challenge. It doesn't save calibrations, so unless it is plugged into some sort of hot swap power situation, it will require re-calibration for still lenses with every battery swap. For cine lenses you can just leave auto-calibrate on and it should be fine. The motors will run on 7.2v so what would be totally cool is some sort of d-tap adapter that has a tiny battery power bank in it that could keep the motors alive for a minute or two during the swap. There seems to be a bit of jumpiness in the motors when you switch from Master to Slave on the hand controller. Probably can be fixed in future firmware updates. The gorgeous jewel box like case will be pretty impractical for real world production situations. I will be buying some longer motor cables. All in all, definitely worth the wait!

I ran into the problem of the Nucleus not saving the calibration for still lenses. Every battery change we had to re-calibrate. Hopefully something can be done in the firmware going forward. Aside from that, absolutely loving the unit!

Yep I agree that having the possibility of swapping batteries without having to re-calibrate would be great! Another thing I would love to see in future firmwares is lens remapping presets built into the hand unit (having 3-4 remapping presets like 85%, 70%, 50%, 30%) then you can use it more reliably and also make individual lens marking discs with those remapping presets! It would really help to space out the far focus marks on lenses.

I'm quite happy with my unit except for one thing. The iris control knob has some serious lag issues and the knob doesn't work till the end at both ends so the iris marks aren't accurate in both directions. Build quality is great and the focus knob feels great! Motors have a really nice motion and very slow adjustments are super smooth!!

I can't remove the 15mm bushings from the Nucleus-M rod adapters for use on 19mm rods. Anybody else having this problem? Is there a trick to this that I'm missing? I would assume they're supposed to just snap off and on, but I can't budge them. Maybe because my left arm is broken in a cast, but my wife can't budge them either. I don't want to break something by prying with a tool...

Sorry but I look at your avatar Paul and then see the phrase "Maybe because my left arm is broken in a cast" and start to wonder what happened... Just an observation.

Breaking up a dog fight...

Is there any way to make the handset menu screen brighter? Mine cannot be seen in the sun at all. I read in the manual there's a sensor on the handset, but the handset screen doesn't change brightness when in the sun.

Anyone know if the motor on these could be run off a 7.2v tap (with a D Tap converter)?

The motor says 7.2v-24v... DJI Focus I believe is 9v+.

The reason I ask is because I'm considering using one with these C300 batteries:

That would allow me to ditch the standard FF, justifying the added cost. Unfortunately a v mount set up is too large for my current gear.

Any comparisons with DJI Focus?

Calibration issues

Calibration issues

Hey guys, im having some pretty serious issues with my unit and I want to check and see if this is common or if it just mine. The issues stem from the unit's inability to find the hard-stops accurately. The show im on right now is using Super Speed MK3s (0.8 pitch gears) with 15mm studio rods. Every time we try to auto-calibrate the lenses, it finds one mark okay, then the other always jumps the motor off the gears before stopping - I suspect it is something in the sensitivity of the motor in it's ability to feel the resistance feedback. When we press the motor into the lens really hard, it maps okay, but emits a grinding sound of over-exertion when it is turning the lens. The current work-around is to start with a an auto-map, then when that fails, try a manual map. This means that lens swaps take quite long unfortunately.

Ive sent this info to Tilta, but they have only tried to identify all other possibly sources of an issue without looking into their unit as the source of the problem. I would love to know if anyone else has experienced something like this with the Nucleus-m.

Sounds to me like you have to setup the motor a different way on your rods and tighten your rods harder . lower the torque setting when you calibrate your lenses also. post a picture of your setup so we can see your setup and make a better recommendation.

Does anybody know where to get a 2-pin to 7-pin cable to power a Nucleus-M motor from a RED Weapon 2-pin Aux Power out?

+1 on this. It would so much better to power the Nucles M from the Limo 2 pin out puts from the battery mount rather then the P tap.

+2 on this. I'm having an issue trying to run it off of
the Red dtap, it's just shuts off when trying to calibrate.
I guess it pulls more then the red expander dtap puts out??

Might want to turn the touque to its lowest setting.. Set the stops and then turn it up if needed. I don't ever use the highest setting as almost every lens I own works great at the lowest setting. This might be why its shutting off.

It's not the torque setting the problem. It's the Red expander ptap. It's got limited amperage which is causing the problem. Just plug your unit directly into the battery ptap.

So ebay sellers have these in stock now and are express shipping them. I picked one up @ 1299 + 10% ebay bucks and it came in under a week. Not as a good a deal as you guys all got, no start stop cables or anything.
