  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

GROUP BUY - SmallHD Production/HDR Monitors

Just received my 1303HDR. Everything was packaged great. Haven't fired it up yet, but managed to attach the C-stand mount and battery plate easily.

I did notice the holes on one side of my sunhood do not line up with the respective holes (1/8inch short - enough to stop both thumbscrews from attaching at the same time). A minor inconvenience, but I'm sure SmallHD will kindly replace it for me. However, I thought others in this GB might benefit from double-checking their own sunhood (if they ordered one).

Many thanks to Chris and the SmallHD team for putting this together.

Hey Guys - We found that some of the sunhoods went out are mis-sized and had screws that were to small. If your hood is not going on properly email me daveb@smallhd.com and I will send you out a replacement hood at our cost. Sorry for the trouble - Dave

Thanks Dave!

Got my 13" HDR in yesterday. Can't believe this beautifully solid nugget of gear, with v-mount plate and other accessories, cost barely more than the 7" hi-brite I got a year or two ago.

Thanks Chris!

Any feedback or response with impressions with units received? Ridiculously clear in direct sun.. but anyone do PW/calibration tests? I've received some negative feedback along with my own issues, but seeing how the rest of the GB is feeling about the monitors.

I lost the wagon

UPDATE:

Received my replacement sunhood for my 1303. The holes still do not line up. *sigh*

>>> Also, the metal flanges on the underside of the hood grommets have scratched up the side of my monitor. Watch out for this! SmallHD - we know gear gets scratched up a bit during normal use ... but surely not from your own accessories.

Does anyone suggest any particular pelican/foam situations for the 24" and 13"? Thx

For my 13", I used mycasebuilder.com to design a custom foam insert for a Pelican 1510. So far so good.

I bought Pelican Storm cases, sized IM2450 and IM2950 for my 13" and 24". Both with pick n pluck foam that I secured down with special foam glue. Seems to be holding great so far, but won't last forever. Both cases just BARELY fit the monitors with table-top stands attached

These monitors are particularly bad for something from SmalHD, - lot of people bought them and are extremely disappointed in viewing angles and lut control. I'm looking to sell mine :(

Vinit - can you be more specific about what you don't like about your monitor.

Complaints help manufacturers learn how they can improve (usually)

What you're saying is:

1. Poor viewing angles
2. What specifically about the LUT situation ?
3. Anything else ?

Thanks Dan,

Just a bit of background on me... I'm a DP who shoots commercials and work with a number of VTR/DIT people in the city, I own one 24", and they own 2-3 17/24" monitors. Our complaints are as follows:

- The viewing angle is my biggest one with respect to using it as a VTR monitor. Second issue is it was consistently being criticized as not colour accurate. But again this brings me back to the viewing angle issue. If you are off by 10 degrees, the colour and contrast shift dramatically.
- The Panasonic 17" was the industry standard for a long time, I feel I could set that monitor at the top of the day and never touch a setting. Especially while shooting in multiple locations and both interior and exterior. With this monitor I find I'm constantly adjusting the Gamma on the monitor when switching from Bright locations to darker night time setups.

I own a number of Small HD products and love all of them. The DP7 OLED is killer! So when this group buy came up I made zero hesitation to jump on buying this monitor. The day it came in I had a custom case built and had it ready to go out on a shoot. Was saddened by the issues above, and I've been playing with it since the day I bought it =(.

Honestly I hope enough people can post their issues with these monitors so SmallHD can take note and perhaps fix via firmware or even a recall.

Thanks for your feedback ! Personally I'm only using Sony OLED for color and gamma accurate monitoring these days.

Briefly played with the idea of getting one of these, or another monitor like a Flanders some time, but there is an old saying something like "you can't dance at two weddings with one rear end" - I guess I could translate that as - either I don't need two monitors right now, or if I'm happy with the Sony, why try something different.

I'm using either a Teradek COLR as a LUT box or the built in LUT ability on the DSMC2 brains.

Are their LUT representations innacurate as well or is there another issue you're experiencing in that regard?

I wouldn't doubt if someone in their organization will read this at some point and take it to heart, if there is anything they can do about it.

Update - well, about a month ago I returned my 2403 to SmallHD and have since ordered a Flanders DM240. The off-axis shift of the SmallHD was just too much to take. I like the design and the idea of it but the execution....not so much. I'm still wondering if the panel that's being used is the one they showed at NAB last year. I have a hard time believing that I would have missed such a thing...

Anyone looking to sell their 1303HDR? Looking for one in great condition...no accessories needed. I actually have the 1703 HDR and looking for the smaller 13" to pull focus vs. the 17" I have...would be open for a trade if anyone is interested...

PM me if so!
