  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Group Buy - SmallHD 702 Series Monitor

i returned mine with dead pixels, though they said they will repair it, but it might take a month until they get stock and ship back, so now just patiently waiting.
they said one or two dead pixels is fine, and i said no its not! im buying a new monitor and i want no dead pixels in a new monitor. i understand the warranty but that should only be in effect if its delivered with no dead pixels and one or two die after use. a warranty isnt supposed to take place on a brand new piece of equipment, it should be new and flawless. if it comes back to me with even one dead pixel im returning it for my money back, giving them one more chance.

Any updates on their reply Chris?

You could always return it if you're not happy. A while back I had a hot pixel on my 502 and they said it needed at least 3 in order to be returned, but I squaked enough and they issued an RMA. I agree that if something is brand new, it shouldn't come already defective. SmallHd has always had great customer service. Yes, they have policies, but generally, customer satisfaction is more important than their policies and they tend to agree, again, if you complain enough in a nice way.

They are looking into the panels and why more of them are coming in already defective too.

i just dont know why they dont look at each one before they ship, my box was completely opened, anyway, hope it works out this time.

Jordan,
I hope this works for you. I finally unboxed, plugged in and screwed around with mine today. Unbelievably great design from outside to the user interface. I love that I can load up a couple pages with different LUTs and quickly audition what flavor I like today. Incredibly simple and powerful monitor. Without a doubt my new favorite toy. The auto image flip will save a bit of time too.

i got confirmation that my panel has been fixed, not exchanged and the invoice says, changed panel with dead pixels to panel with no dead pixels.
so ill update once i get it to see if it's true!

So how do we calibrate the monitor?

I find it to be pretty accurate when dropping the backlight down to 1, brightness and contrast down to 30.
Any way to change the color though? I'm noticing mine a little warmer then what it should be.

Not really built in control, but you could always generate a LUT to take out a bit of any warmth you feel is there, then just adjust the brightness/contrast and backlight

i was hoping they would put out luts that mimic alexa rec709 and dragon sensors red color to somewhat match, but of now i think people are meeing with the back light so they dont seem much brighter then what you are actually capturing.

Hey Jordan,

Any word from your 702? Hopefully you got yours alright. At this point, unfortunately I cannot express my disappointment with Small HD. I've been using their products through rental houses and have loved them but I have told them, repeated times that my brand new 702 doesn't only contains dead pixels but also malfunctions, and now after waiting 3 more weeks after sending mine back, my 702 arrives on my door with no dead pixel but is still not functioning properly. Now I gotta figure out how to fix this issue, I would return this monitor and stick to renting if I didn't lose money on paying for taxes/customs.

Please keep us posted if they have fixed yours.

Best,

Bummer to hear some of you are having issues with the 702. Mine arrived and appears to be all good. A friend had a very early model (possibly demo) with a very finicky joystick that seemed to stick when moving in a certain direction. Not so awesome when trying to navigate menus or adjust sliders on settings. But like I said, mine came in great shape, no dead pixels, no issues from what I could tell. I've only used it one shoot so far, but it was clutch...using the image overlay function on an app commercial that helped us place an iphone in the same spot across multiple background settings...way better than trying to tape off rough lines on a monitor! I just submitted a feature request that allows you to send the image overlay downstream (like you can already do with a look/LUT), as sometimes that may be helpful viewing on a larger screen (assuming there isn't a VTR operator around who can do this for you). Would be cool if they make all the built-in tools possible to send downstream if you like.

I was already using the 502 on a tv show as a general framing monitor and the auto rotate was super sweet when I'd have to operate goofy with an easyrig. Anytime I have to go back to a TV Logic I'm pretty bummed out, which says a lot for ease of use. And not a hiccup in ~40 days of beast mode production. My only tiny complaint was that the monitor doesn't automatically turn on after a battery swap (powered off p-tap), so whenever an AC would change the brick, I'd have to press the little button and wait 8 seconds. Rough, I know. Like I said, it's a small complaint.

I have one dead pixel (red), other than that everything works fine.

Best,

i got mine back and with no dead pixels! phew, i havent been able to test it on a camera yet, waiting for a prep to come along this month since i sold everything and waiting for the Raven…but i played pong on it and all seems good on the display and joystick :)

That was me. I said backlight all the way down to 1, brightness at default(because if you change it it breaks the signal) and contrast down to 30. This is as calibrated as I can get it.

My 702 and 502 loose all detail in the shadows, especially in low light situations. Reinstalled firmware, have tried all brightness, contrast and backlight settings and it's unusable in low light. Anyone else have this issue? Low light settings and seeing the low end?

I am thinking about ordering one of these, is everyone still happy with there's? Would you guys mind posting some pics of your rigs with the monitor?
