  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Group Buy: Peleng 8mm + ND filters

So the Peleng + full filter set would be $795*.75, so right around $600?

Well, that would be 25% off, yes, but hopefully that would be the most we'd pay. I'd love to come down some more, but then again, the filters could be worth every penny.

For you sorry folks without prognosticating powers--did you get filters as part of your deal? I wonder if Doug might even take your filters and re-set them with the NDs (that is, IF Doug can work out an ND package creation, and IF he's amenable).

I'd be interested in this offer. The lense looks like it will be a neat effects lense, granted I haven't tried distorting a fisheye back to normal before but for the money I'd give it a shot.

Fyi, Bruce Allen did a rectilinear conversion for this lens here. Some blur and distortion at the edges.

Also, sense a mattebox won't work on this thing, ND's are a must!

You ain't kiddin. You'd need to put the mattebox on the viewfinder. Facing backwards.

Yes, I did - got the filters (green, yellow, etc) with the Nikon version. I actually got it on eBay for $150 (I think it was like a 3rd-generation eBay sale...) but can't see any similar deals at the moment.

I'd be very interested in getting those filters re-set to be NDs, of course!

Hopefully we can get the PL mount version under $600. At some point maybe it becomes smarter to buy the higher-quality glass (Nikon or the cheaper Sigma?). To me the main argument against mixing Nikon and PL mount lenses on the Red is that it might take time and be fiddly to change mounts. This seems something of a moot point with the fisheye, as you'll likely be taking a while to reconfigure the camera setup for it anyway, so changing mounts wont be as much of a showstopper?

1 please

with ND-.3, .6, .9, 1.2, 1.5, 1.8, 2.1

I know it's a big set but needed.

Add me to the list for the 8mm lens and a set of ND's.

I hear you: 1.2 would be okay in most settings, but you can't stack these. The problem is the limited numbers of the filter housings that come from Peleng--and they may have backed off production of those.

We're looking into it, though.

Group buy at Long Valley Equipment

Hi

Just a little backstory -

I was the first to make a PL mount for the Peleng. I've sold about 85 of these over the years, and the folks who sell the original Peleng, being very smart, realized that they should offer this fine lens in PL as well as all the other mounts they make for it.

It seems to me that you can get this lens from them for about $380 or so, usually off eBay, in PL mount. They started doing this about three years ago which is why my sales have dropped off.

I have about ten 303 stainless PL mounts left. I think that the eBay Pelengs in PL mount have that mount made in anodized aluminum, which I suppose is somewhat inferior. Actually I haven't seen one of these lenses, so perhaps someone who has one can confirm the material?

At any rate, I don't think there is anything wrong with those $380 PL mounted Pelengs that you see on eBay. They probably work fine, and since you guys are going to use them with the RED camera instead of a film camera, you can confirm focus without a trip to the lab.

If you want to buy one of my stainless mounts and put it a on a Peleng yourself, I'm happy to sell the last ten for $150 each. They will come with three set screws and the allen wrench. It's an easy job to swap the Nikon or Canon or Pentax mount that comes with the Peleng for my mount, if you are mechanically inclined.

Then you should test the lens by comparing tape and eye and shooting a test, to make sure that it focuses correctly. You should also do this with any Peleng that already comes with a PL mount.

Now, on to the iris fix ring:

The Peleng has a wacky double iris activator set up that is just no good. I sell a ring that you can use to lock together the two rings on the Peleng so they act as one, as they should. If you want one of these, I have them in stock and they are $75. I think in the previous thread there are two pictures of this ring, one off and one on the lens.

ND filters:

Right now, I can offer only the ND .6 for the Peleng. I have 85, and 85n6 combo for anyone shooting color negative, which is not likely since this is the RED user forum.

I will find out if I can have my supplier make additional ND blanks for me in .3 .9 and 1.2 material, and maybe even more values since everyone here seems to want a full set.

Now the only problem is that it seems that up until about three months ago, each Peleng came with four behind the lens filters, a coated clear, a regular clear, an orange, and a green. I use the metal holders from these original filters for my new filters, and up until now, I sent each lens out with the original coated clear, 85, 85n6, and n6.

New lenses now come with one filter only - the coated clear. So there is only one filter holder per lens. So for me to offer a set of three or four NDs for RED users, I would have to find a supply of these holders or have my machinist make them up. Hmmm.

So, let me work on getting these ND sets for you guys.

Please note - the lens and PL mount are set up to work correctly with the rear filter installed. If you take the filter off the lens, the focus scale will be incorrect. The lens will actually focus closer than usual, which could be useful.

For those of you who have filter holders, you could send them to me and I could install NDs in them.

Also, the 8mm is a wild and crazy fisheye when used with a 35mm sized sensor, and a WIDE wide angle lens when used with a S16 or B4 sized sensor. So if you can switch between those two sensors with the RED camera, then the Peleng acts as two lenses. Very cool.

As for my other equipment, I think you might find it works great with your RED. The camera is 12 volts? Please know that DeWalt batteries are $60 each and the 15 minute fast charger is $99. They are bullet proof, too. I could make up a DeWalt to RED adapter and cable if there is interest.

Well that made me feel better....

Whoa, so is this Douglas's way of saying he won't be selling us a good group pricing for Pelengs with the PL mount on it, collimated and with the double iris mod and the NDs?

I just talked to Doug. The issue is not so much one of desire, but availability. However, it looks like there may be a possible solution for everyone to get a win out of this. We'll keep you posted.

I'd probably take a Seven Jib... though I'm curious if anyone has experience with it vs. the Porta-Jib either post it here or PM me. Thanks!

I just mounted red on the seven jib today. 95 lb. counter balance with Oconnor 1030 head with the red. Old school Miller sticks. Performed beautifully for being so damn compact. Rec'd for ENG style where a jib would make it killer. Nice and simple, solid build. Any plans for remote operation?

I got one of the ebay Pelengs ones long ago but I'm down for an nd set and for sure the battery connector. That sounds sweet if it works.

I just received my lens and the piece of shit never gave me the filters as advertised on ebay. He's all the way across the world and it's not even worth sending it back. Now I really need to get a hold of these. Any idea where I can purchase these from?

Jeff saved the Day! Thanks!

Where are we at on the group buy for this? Douglas?
