  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Group Buy: Optitron2 - Wireless remote for Canon/Nikon glass

Dan And Gunleik are the only ones incomplete. Gunleik already has the demo kit.
Everyone else had their units shipped or has already received them. Loic is out.

Mine has arrived - thanks Jacek and Scott

I guess that means it is time for the post mortem.

How was your overall experience with this group buy?

What worked well and what did not?

What could be done differently to provide a better outcome?

Whether you participated or not, it would be good to hear your thoughts.

I wasn't a part of the buy (having already purchased a unit), but it looked like a great group buy to me! Thanks for putting it together.

Stephen

Very pleased with group buy. Jacek gave us a great deal and a timely delivery. Thanks for putting it together Scott, I would not have gotten one otherwise and am sure I will be using this for years.

Very pleased with this group buy (although if I had pulled the trigger 2 years ago when I was emailing a bit with Jacek I would have paid the same due to the really strong dollar at the moment, but that´s life)
Thanks Scot and Jacek

Mine is shipped. Thanks to all-sponsor-group rep-group buyers in making this happen.

Edit

Damn, the above reads so impersonal.

Take 2

Thanks Jacek, Scott, and all you fellow co-conspirators.

Received mine. Thanks. Looks good.
Just one question: I am able to control the IRIS via Wireless, but not the FOCUS. any hints?

best wishes and kind regards,
Martin

turn on the autofocus motors on the lens? ;-)

If Scott's suggestion doesn't work, remember there are a few in-camera settings you need to adjust, as well.

It should work, no problem.

Stephen

Thanks for the group buy! The Optitron 2 is more solid than I first expected when I signed up for the group buy. Impressive piece of gear, nice work Jacek!
For the first time I can have a follow focus close to the left handle of my shoulder rig. No more fiddling in front of the face. Going super lightweight with precise focus possibilities is just so awesome!

… after I found the AF switch on the lens it is an awesome piece of gear ;-)
shame on me!

anyway - just for the record
tokina 28-70mm 2.8
canon 70-200mm 2.8
canon 100mm makro 2.8
work fine

there seems to be a problem with the tokina 11-20mm 2.8
feels like only two focus positions.
any one else having more luck with this special lens?

best wishes and a happy new 2016!
martin

The 100mm macro f2.8L in my bag doesn't play well with the Optitron, but it doesn't bother me, as we only use that lens for special macro shots anyway.

OK, I tested mine on Matt Uhry's Epic Dragon-M with a few Canon lenses that were handy:

Canon 35mm 1.4 - works great!
Canon 135mm 2.0 - works great! Also works great with 1.4x teleconverter.
Tokina 11-16 2.8 - slight noise but works great
Sigma 18-35 1.8 - works great until you adjust the iris a lot then stops responding. Probably have to update lens firmware.

I really like the way the lenses autoconfigure when you plop them on the camera. Plug-and-play - and far faster than hooking up remote follow focus units and recalibrating them to each lens.

The only sad / good news is that I'm now going straight into shooting a really funny guerrilla comedy show pitch on a bunch of DSLRs.

I'm excited but since I need the cash to put into that production, I'll probably be dropping out my Raven and Scarlet-W reservations.

And that means I should also sell my Optitron, damn it! Anyone interested? I'll put up a for sale thread but am slammed in pre-production.

The total cost to me from the group buy was $2348.33 for the whole kit with wireless, shipping, tax, PayPal fees, etc.

Anyone want mine for $2200? Save $600!

Email me at boacinema (at) gmail (dot) com if interested.

another question from the dumb side:
am I supposed to toggle 1:1 magnify and start / stop recording with the optitron?

best wishes and kind regards,
martin
