  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Group Buy: Optitron2 - Wireless remote for Canon/Nikon glass

I can do that, but I want to keep the edits to the OP text to a minimum so this should be the only one.

I think the math adds up.

Scott. May I request that you put in clear end prices for wired and wireless options at all tires?
I too get a bit confused by the current setup.

Now even the deposit is a bit unclear.
It should be specified in USD

The post has been updated to show the prices of items at each discount level. Do you still have questions? Ask them and I will do my best to provide answers.

if you can be clear on the price and its that good a deal i'm in

Just a little input. I haven't yet managed to drain the battery, I would not buy more than one extra (for redundancy)

Sweetspot seems to appear at aroud 30 signups. 2k for the bundle.
At 40+ signups, it rides in at around 1600 (check first post).

I guess that's where huge orders could come in.

I use this thing TOGETHER with Movieslate 8 (beta) and foolcontrol, and feel they all cover very different uses and roles on a set.

Movieslate is a capture and script-tool. Elegant for entering "other" metadata and send them down the post-line. (and CAPTURES whatever is in the RCP stream, if you need that for post). Ideal for workflows and a great way to get your data home, but is usually not operated by the camera dept.

Foolcontrol is a typical 1st/2nd AC tech-tool. Just makes it so much more elegant to control the camera.

Optitron is a specialized focus tool, which works "the way you want it to and the way you expect it to".
Even though they all have overlapping features (in the sense that they can address the same controls on the camera) they are to me covering very different on-set uses and users. Making them play together is to me the trick.

OK great. So basically this is like Red's T.H.C. except instead of being $2900 Frikkin' Dollars, it doesn't control zoom but is $2000 with the potential to be $1600?

So let's see:
- Tokina 11-20 2.8 - $550
- Sigma 18-35 1.8 - $800 or Canon 16-35
- Canon 24-70 f2.8 II USM - $1800
- Canon 70-200 f2.8 IS II - $2000
- Optitron - $1600

...then you have an insane 2.8-or-lower wireless lightweight setup from 11-200 for $6750?!

And add a few more stills lenses (24 1.4, 35 1.4, 50mm 1.4, 85 1.4) and then you have:
f1.4: 24 - 85mm
f1.8: 18 - 85mm
f2.8: 11 - 200mm

Might want to bundle it with a Cinegears single-axis controller for zoom. Hmm, hope they do another group buy on that too...

OK OK next question - what's the latency like compared to other wireless follow focus units?

Gunleik, still waiting for your full write-up! Didn't you get an Optitron to test? The world wants to know! You're an honest, tell-it-like-it-is guy so I'd like to hear your thoughts.

Oh hang on, Stephen wrote one. Awesome. Reading intently...

It is pretty good. Isn't it?

What do you say, you're in?

Ah, the wireless price is errant. It should read: OT2 Wireless receiver kit for Red cameras $556.50 each

Thank you Samir. I apologize I misunderstood your post though it was quite clear. I will correct it at once.

Coffee... Coffee is the answer. I can see that, now that I have had mine. ;-)

Tier 4 #40+ units- 30% off retail
OptiTron2 kit for Red Cameras $1396.50 each
OT2 Wireless receiver kit for Red cameras $238.50 each

I think the OT2 is wrong in price. Looks like you put 70% off instead of the 30% off.

OptiTron2 wireless receiver kit works with the OptiTron2 on every camera system we support(Sony, Red, Arri, Vision research and others)

It’s a small wireless transceiver that cuts the cord from the OptiTron2 for remote applications like Steadicam, gimbal, crane, drone, etc.

Product code- OTRx

It features:

-Very small size (1”x1.25”x2”) (25mmx31mmx52mm)

– 100m rated range

– 2.4 GHz band for reliable connection.

plug and play operation
low power draw
wide voltage range 7-17V
integrated toolless industry standard 1/4-20 mounting screw

Will it work in tandem with the HOTLINK?

The Optitron depends on the CTRL port being available, thus if the hotline uses that: nope.

That's why I have asked Jacek about integration towards other receivers.

That said, the Optitron receiver is extremely small and elegant.

You could of course run it tethered. :-)

I assume though that you want to run both Optitton and FoolConrtol together wirelessly. One option for that might be to run some other compact WIFI router via GigE.

Thing I am seeing is that a lot of applications run for the CTRL port. We'll make a "switch" for that in our device, so that we get the access, and others (like optitron) still get access.
But a more elegant way would be to have a "hub" where all RCP units could connect and do the part they do for the roles they have. Foolcontrol changing a look and Optitron changing focus...

Some aren't as depending on low latency (like foolcontrol/movieslate) so they could connect through ethernet. But the stuff I work on and optitron both need latency closing in on zero. The controls we send are differnet though, so we don't conflict on commands.

I will be interested to see what you come up with for a switch. I would think that GigE would be plenty fast enough for many FoolControl functions. It was my impression that the problem there is that WIFI is not robust enough for low latency critical comms like focus and TC and that is why Jacek chose Bluetooth for Optitron.

Hotlink is a great device, but I am wondering if a better solution might be if Mikael were to code FoolControl to access Bluetooth. I hope he is. That way a single tranceiver on the camera could jack into the control port and afford us Bluetooth connectivity for a number of devices.

Jacek, is the Optitron wireless tranceiver capable of addressing multiple devices? Or maybe I should be asking can multiple clients address the camera via your tranceiver? Please pardon my ignorance.

We don't plan to release the switch as a standalone thing... as of now... We just see that we don't mind others having access to RCP. From what Jacek wrote, it sounds like a wifi, not bluetooth connection, and if that is the case, he probably could speak through our box or the hotlink. I'll check that tomorrow (if it's wifi or bluetooth). It's not documented but I guess I can find the network. THC wouldn't be able to do that, as it is RF.

Anyway, will try to start uploading videos with examples from different lenses tomorrow.
I at least think they are very convincing.
